With Trump Out Of The Way, Will Some Republican Senators Finally Find Their Backbone?

Is this something we can hope for? That maybe some of the more centrist Senate Republicans may cross the aisle from time to time? I just think they were so in thrall to Trump (or afraid of him), that they just towed the Trump line. Now that he's gone and has no power over them, maybe some of them will rediscover their independence and help us get some things done. I'm thinking of Ben Sasse and a few others (we really only need 2--maybe fewer if we can sweep Georgia, but I'm not counting on that). Am I asking for too much here, or are they just too far gone? Has the Trump poison seeped too far into them to ever be sucked out?

He is busy pouring gasoline on the fire. What the hell. He's got another six years thanks to the moronic voters of South Carolina.

The dirt is still out there.

What might start them seeing the light is the full weight of the DoJ coming down on their heads. When they see DeJoy, RoJo, etc. in prison orange, maybe they’ll wise up and wake up before it comes for them.

A few examples will make a good start.

....he's got the republicans by the short hair. Maybe not in every state but in many states. He's going to be the de facto leader of the republican party for a while, even if he's wearing a NY State orange jump suit.

Why would they NOT support the asshole who got that kind of turnout?

We gotta get over the idea that the Repubs are going to regain their senses. They found a winning platform. With Orange hair.

They’ve realized that their party has become 100% the Trump Party, and anyone who fails Dear Leader will, at best, have their political career “rubbed out.”

I still think they are most likely criminal. They should never hold public office ever. Republicans have been derelict in their duty. They’re in violation of their oaths.

They have proven time and again that the middle ground is gone. Trumpmania demands that they take a far right hard line. Those whackjobs will be threatening all congresspeople who might dare cross the line. I believe Trump will want revenge on everyone he feels has ever “wronged” him, and will use his thinly veiled code words to get his zombies to do his bidding.

Its not a backbone they need, its consequences for their actions. If a vote is needed to pass legislation, they can be had for a price.

If they can only cross him once we democrats knocked him to the ground, that's not really "backbone," is it.

Maybe opportunism?

have it when he's no longer the president. Those that don't continue to 'circle the wagons' for Trump will wind up suffering the consequences. He'll use whatever he can to maintain a powerbase in the Party. And you can bet (for ratings purposes) the MSM will continue to give Trump the exposure he craves.

and drone on about their duty to "oversee" the executive branch.

You know, like they did under Presidents Clinton and Obama.

And god forbid if President Biden wears a tan suit or Dr. Biden shows some arm.

These are the vital concerns of the "loyal opposition."

Oh, and I'm sure Hunter and Hillary will continue to be the focus of their "concern."

The betrayal of our country to a foreign power? Appointing a rapist to the Supreme Court? Ignoring and then downplaying a pandemic that's killed a quarter of a million of our citizens?

Not so much.
