to be defeated at the ballot box while seeking re-election after a single term.
(Edited to add: my original post incorrectly said he was the fifth.)

(9,224 posts)Although you could say Ford doesn't count because he was never elected to a first term as president, and also Cleveland because four years after he lost re-election he did win a second term.
But even that way, it's 8:

(23,152 posts)wasn't much of a popular-vote election, as I understand. So not sure we can count him as being defeated at the ballot-box.

(1,035 posts)This article says 10 incumbent presidents have lost re-election. I have not independently verified the information but it jibes with what I know about American presidential history.

(182,603 posts)Frankly the DNC messed up all over and got themselves pinned in with protesters and BLM. It looks like Trump lost but it was really close despite his horrendous performance.
Look at W, he cleared got caught lying ya into a war but yet he still rode 9/11 to a second term. Obama came into a mess and had a relentless coordinated media attack on him but he was able to be re-elected. Poppa Bush had the misfortune of a dipping economy and an incredible campaign/candidate in Clinton.

(45,380 posts)to make sure people can vote and have their votes counted. It should be obvious there are serious problems that can be fixed. Biden should put Stacy Abrams in charge of it.

(3,166 posts)Uniform requirements in each state for federal elections.
Early voting available for at least two weeks in ALL states.
Mail-in ballot options available in ALL states.
Universal voter registration, unless you take action to opt out.
Enough polling places for everyone, paid for with federal money.
Uniform standards for counting votes after the election. All this hodgepodge of state rules needs to GO.
Is any of this possible? I know there are things in the constitution about elections, but I don't have time to look it up right now!
