What about itinerant workers? (I think that's the right word.) I'm sure there are many people in your situation. I wonder what they do. Are they comfortable just not voting?

You raise an important issue - I hope you can register at your mom's house. Can you temporarily change your mailing address (maybe just for some things) to your mom's as well? If you're registered at her address and don't get mail there, you could get "caged."

I'm glad you contacted the Dem. Party.

Good luck!

Mon Oct 1, 2012, 07:31 PM
Oct 2012

In fact Republicans have been registering as Democrats for years so they can screw up Democratic primary races....Give the Republican headquarters a call and see what they say. But it seems to me your real issue is that you won't be anywhere near your mom's or your PO box on Nov. 6... if you are moving to Jacksonville....So the only way you could vote would be with an absentee ballot. Try that approach....You need an absentee ballot because you will be moving, but don't know your new address yet...have it sent to your mom's. Add your name to her mailbox... tell her to tell her postman that you will be getting your mail at her place for a few months....

In FL you must vote in the county and precinct in which you are registered....that's the reason you will need an absentee ballot if you will be in Jacksonville.

I wouldn't think the hazmat endorsement would cost extra. This is essentially a replacement copy of a current license, not a renewal or new license. After all, isn't the extra $$ to cover the cost of the background check?

btw, anyone with a hazmat endorsement on their CDL should be able to deal with being registered as a Republican for the sake of expediency.

In short: They want an address tied to a residence.

If you are a stalker who has a few dollars to burn with one of a thousand online information brokers, you can find voting registration records quite easily. You can then go right to that person's house and snuff them out while they sleep. Violent, psycho ex-spouses already know this quite well.

What has completely floored me is that Teabaggers haven't made use of that for domestic terrorism purposes. A single hacker could expose to the whole world the voter registration rolls of an entire state... names, addresses, SSN's, it's all right there.

Our voter registration system is the most effective targeting system for political terrorism you could ever hope for.

have solved this problem by renting a mailbox from an agent and using the agent's physical address. To find companies that do that, search these terms:
the town and state you want for your residence, rent mail-box physical-address. Check the customer comments before signing up with a company. I know that this works because I have done it for 7 years. When I moved to SD, I got my Rapid City residential address first, through my agent. With that receipt and my passport, I opened a bank account and got a cell phone. With all of those receipts, I got a SD drivers license. I took all of those documents to the voter registrar and got registered. All of that was done in 1 day. My cost: $120 a year to the mailbox company and about $200 a year for forwarding my mail once a month. If you live nearby, you can pick up your mail personally for free.

South Dakota wants you, and will bend over backwards to make it work for you. The reason is that SD's population is insufficient to be allocated two US Representatives. We have 1 Representative and 2 Senators. SD wants to increase its population and get another Representative.

If you are locked into Florida, the GOP has just screwed you. Sorry about that.

Do you have 2 forms of proof of residence going into that box? It should prove u live where u live.. Or you can list the hotel that you are staying at as a residence. We have a few people doing that. One man who has been at our hotel for months just had his voter registration show up at our hotel for him. There has to be some way for you to vote. # MYTH: If the voter is homeless and has no legal residence, the voter may not vote.

Which I have been using for my DL for over thirty years. They told me they are now required to have a physical address on their records AND on the DL.

I asked them to continue to use the PO Box as a mailing address, but the most recent thing I got from them was sent to my street address. I hate using the street address for important mail - the box is not visible from anywhere on the farm, it constantly gets bashed so it is not weather tight and the carrier usually will not drive up the long driveway to deliver anything that may be damaged if it gets wet.

I've had packages left leaning up against the post the mailbox is on - on the rural road where anyone could stop and pick them up. THAT is why I pay for a PO Box - so my mail is secure and less open for theft.

But apparently PO Boxes are no longer acceptable to the Florida Division of Motor Vehicles!

Because many people want to use that address rather than the PO Box. I don' know why the PO Box was good for over thirty years and suddenly is not sufficient. Both the DL Bureau and the Post Office had the street address on file for us so it was not as if we could not be found easily. We've lived on the same property for over thirty years so we're not transients.

Oh yeah - the same DL office also did not want to accept my old Social Security card because the young clerk had never seen one like it. It's the only SS card I've ever had, except for the other original which is still attached to the page my parents got in the late 1950s early 1960s when they got the SS cards for us all. Good thing there was an older clerk there that remembered the old style SS cards or the young clerk would have not accepted it at all.

Like the other posters said, I'd use your Mom's address. Send in a U S postal service change of address to your mom's house, if you have to (if you're on good terms, you can pick your mail up there, can't you?). Will mail addressed to you at her address be enough to prove residence?

I don't know what all you have to have to prove residence. I wouldn't pay money to have her utilities put in your name. I think that's going too far. Never a good idea to put other people's living expenses under your name.

Good luck. The election is a month away, so I'm not sure what can be done in that time, if the mail thing doesn't work.

"Having a home is not a prerequisite to vote in the United States. But activists and homeless service providers still face major challenges trying to help homeless Americans register.

Pitts v. Black (1984) and several subsequent cases in the 1980s and ’90s established that homeless people could not be denied the right to vote because they did not live in a traditional residence. A shelter, park or street corner can be designated as a residence. In states that require a mailing address for voter registration, homeless voters can usually use the addresses of shelters, churches, friends’ houses, or P.O. boxes."

For the last twelve years, my address has been a P.O. box (my town does not have rural mail delivery). So although I have a place to live, the elections folks have no way of knowing that.

41. I think you should apply for a change of address, using your mother's address,
Mon Oct 1, 2012, 08:22 PM

as instructed below. Then apply for an absentee ballot. They'll mail the absentee ballot to your mother's address, so you won't have to go to a polling place and produce a driver's license with the same address.

It doesn't matter that you haven't been using your mother's address for other things. You just moved there. (Lots of people sign up for new addresses right after they move to places.)

they give you a confirmation that you are eligible to vote try and get it in writing. If the election workers give you trouble on election day just remove yourself to the County Clerk's office and talk about it there- generally they can record your vote there just as easily, without having to fill a provisional. I think. Not always sure on that.

This would be a good opportunity to educate them so that they don't make the similar blunders with others.

how do homeless people vote? there should be a way - but i don't know it.
best of luck to you getting it cleared up. of course in FL they'd go after you for having a box instead of a standing address. keep us posted.

56. Many people use mailbox addresses
Mon Oct 1, 2012, 09:02 PM
Oct 2012

If a driver's license has your mailbox address on it it SHOULD be legit. If a person is a citizen they should be able to rent a mailbox as their stable address, especially if their home was foreclosed, they travel a lot, they have an abusive ex, they live in an RV, they occasionally move as renters and so find the mailbox address a permanent solution, they are rural and so have a PO mailbox, or possibly many other reasons besides homelessness. Even if a person was homeless but maintained a mailbox address they should be able to vote--if the US mail gets to you, you are able to use your mailbox address on your tax returns, you should be able to vote. Heck, even active military members have a special APO that is not a physical address where they actually "live."
It is starting to sound like only white landowners will be allowed to vote soon.

Keep us posted about voter registration. I would just use Mom's address. Can't you just go to DMV and get your license updated with her address?

consider contacting the local chapters of your ACLU and National Lawyers Guild (assuming you have the time and energy), so they can become informed on the issue and possibly start litigation on a serious civil rights issue that seems worthy of intense scrutiny and judicial review.

With your proven grit, you'll also solve this voting issue. Don't give up!

78. I was voter caged in 2008
Tue Oct 2, 2012, 03:01 PM
Oct 2012

and I didn't find out until I got there to vote.

Well, I knew the Republicans had been busy little bees, so I'd made sure to take my voter card and my passport with me and I demanded to know just what the hell was going on. I recited my voting history in local and primary elections up to two months before the Big Day and said I wanted to know just who had taken me off the list. In other words, I was both loud and officious and the Inner Dowager Duchess was fully out and in high dudgeon.

It took them four phone calls downtown and a lot of red faces, but I got to vote that day. This was during early voting and I don't think it would have happened on election day when the place was packed. I also think everyone is going to remember me, the Inner Dowager Duchess has that effect on people.

So please, go in and demand to know what is going on. Voter caging is illegal and the GOP has been fined for it before and they still do it every damned year.

The explanation that you are using a post office box to avoid duns while you're getting out of debt is a valid one, so don't worry about that.

And good for you for getting out from under that kind of debt. One of the happiest days of my life was when I kissed off the mortgage and was 100% debt free.
