On Election night, I didnt want to go to bed. I wanted to be ready and prepared in the event that Trump won a 2nd term. I had a sort of PTSD from 2016. I went to bed in 2016 only to wake up at 3am to the CNN chyron CLINTON CONCEDES TO TRUMP.
That chyron haunted me all the way to the day after Election Day as I went to bed truthfully scared and anxious that I will wake up to another CNN chyron announcing Trump had been re-election. I didnt sleep that well and I was shaking in anxiety thinking about waking up to BIDEN CONCEDES TO TRUMP.
This election was a squeaker. Despite running a shit show for the last 4 years, this man was almost re-elected. Their turnout game was good. They gave us a legitimate run for our money. They brought a red wave of support, although our wave was a little bigger (mic drop).
It boggles me that had Donald Trump been less of a massive dick, he may have won. It terrifies me that people in real positions of power will model their behavior after him -current and future governors, senators, congresspersons, states legislators, etc-. People will look at that and say even if for a little while, you can be a whiny vindictive bitch and win power.

(866 posts)I do agree with Nate Silver. He got elected because he was a massive dick.

(8,286 posts)He probably really doesnt give a shit about causes or policy but hes been a really good useful idiot for them. Hes delivered tax cuts, judges, less regulations... you know, the typical Republican bullshit they claim creates more jobs when its really for their wealthy donors.
He didnt followed through on everything but he followed through on enough for the to give him their support, and then increase it.
I dont think his support increased because he was a massive dick. I think he won with bare minimum because he was a massive dick (and also he was the horse they were stuck with)... but I think his base support is because hes a dick and the increased support is because he was a useful idiot.

(15,281 posts)...that would appeal to his supporters, so yes, he really fucked this up for himself.
It's a shame this might mean that only the price of 200,000+ lives lost is buying us freedom from Trump.

(8,286 posts)and groveling fans that comes with being President.
He doesnt really want to do the work. Had Trump been his usual dick self AND been good at handling COVID, he would have won re-election. COVID showed that he doesnt want the downsides of being POTUS.
But being a dick is exactly what stopped him from handling COVID in an effective way.

(15,281 posts)But he took COVID as a personal affront, as life being unfair to poor little him, and reacted accordingly.

(8,286 posts)He give it to Mike Pence, who I assume is a slightly more competent person, but unfortunately, Pence was getting too much attention with his daily press briefing and Trump figured that he should be the one getting all that attention because Im the President and its my show. No one gets to be in the spotlight but me.

(12,509 posts)It showed his incompetence in the extreme, and even more lives would have been lost if he continued this herd death sentence madness.

(8,286 posts)But being the massive dick that he is, he couldnt bring himself to care enough. He couldnt bring himself to swallow his pride and actually use materials and strategies two previous administrations left behind to deal with an issue like COVID.

(47,613 posts)how much support he's gotten considering what a horrible job he's done. It also occurred to me that if things hadn't been as bad as they are regarding the pandemic, unemployment, and the economy, this monster could have won a 2nd term. And that would be no matter who Democrats nominated.
We have some truly serious problems in this country and they won't be fixed easily or quickly. It took a long time to create them, they won't go away because of one or even two elections.
