Wisconsin recount must be PRE-PAID

As the November 3, 2020, general election results in the U.S. Presidential race in Wisconsin were more than 0.25% difference between the two main candidates, any request for a recount requires a filing fee. Upon this writing, the difference is 0.70%.

In the WEC Recount Manual, it states:
“When a filing fee is required, the cost of the recount should be estimated by the filing officer including the actual cost incurred by the Elections Commission to provide services for performing the recount, and pre-paid by the petitioner in cash or in another form of payment acceptable to the filing officer at the time of filing. Wis. Stat. § 9.01(1)(ag)2 and 3.”

In Wisconsin Statute 9.01 (1)(ag)3 it furthers specifies, “No petition for which a fee is required is valid unless the proper calculated or estimated fee is paid at the time of filing.”
