(6,011 posts)Ever since I hit my mid-50s, I've been pretty much embarrassed by so many in my age/sex/race "group".
All of a sudden, all these guys my age, including some I've known since childhood, were taking these
hard right turns, socio-politically. It was like some kind of magnetic pull. Some had become very racist (I don't know if it was sudden, or it was always there, yet hidden). Some started expressing the same sentiments one hears from callers to right wing radio.
I don't understand this phenomenon. How does this happen? What makes people change like that?

(778 posts)For as cool and enlightening as many of the posts on here are, I had no idea the age group was older. I had lost faith in my own generation. 65 year old white female here.
Is it possible that the people haven't turned racist or tea party like? Could they have always been this way and we just didn't realize it? We do discuss politics much more nowadays then when we were young.
Definitely non-white races and the youth pulled us out of this mess! Cheers to them!

(5,113 posts)Born and raised in the most rural part of North Carolina, in what may be one of the smallest towns in existence (495 when I was born... still not over 1000 yet). A town that was 85% black even back when I was born. Yet, the whites ruled everything. Never understood it. Could not wait to get away from it. It is diversity that fuels our society. It is inclusiveness that makes it grow. This is how we arrive at a society akin to the one postulated by Gene Roddenberry and others. We have taken a stands for this. We have overcome ignorance and bigotry. We still have a long way to go, but at least we are starting up again.
WE VOTED THEM OUT!

(1,639 posts)"Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations". The cornerstone of Vulcan philosophy. Though in the reboot, they did show the Vulcans as pretty prejudiced against Spock's human mother.
This particular vision is even better than Roddenberry's in the mid 1960's. Because while Uhura was cool, and definitely ahead of the times, in some ways she was just a telephone operator. Harris is the fricken' First Officer!
Like Spock, she may have even more to offer than the Captain, but she knows how to use her intelligence and self-assurance to lead by example and support the Captain in his four year mission.

(5,113 posts)The philosophy of IDIC is one I embraced way back. (I saw the original series at age 3 and 4 and never forgot it. Was a die hard fan ever since.) You might check out the books as far as Uhura is concerned. Several times in those stories, Kirk had to marvel at what she actually did as a communications chief on a massive starship. Hell, she helped write the translational matrixes for a few versions of the Universal Translator, taught at Starfleet for a few decades after the original mission, and married a Vulcan! (Depending on the story you read... heh)

(28,941 posts)At the time ST: OS was broadcast, with exception of nurses on the hospital ships, women were banned from service on board any USN ship. To see a black woman as an officer, on the bridge, commanding a vital section, equivalent to engineering or science, was a revelation and a goal. Dr King was right to encourage Nichols to stay with the series.

(25,960 posts)that 10 pm was too late to watch TV, even on a Friday night, I got blamed when we were sent to bed. 🙄
Often we managed to sneak back to watch anyway.
I read many of those books as well. The quality varied back in the day, but some were quite good, and spent a lot more time fleshing out characters like Uhura and McCoy. Diane Duane and Diane Carey were among my favorites. My experience with the books ended a while back but I might have to dip back into the genre.
OldBaldy1701E
(5,113 posts)was the novel 'Dreadnaught' by Diane Carey. One reason I loved it so much was that it was told by a lower decks crew member. Plus, the story was great.

I actually think it's men like those on DU that will eventually prevail across our country. It won't be in our lifetimes, but it's coming. We need to erase male toxicity. They can either get on board the progress train or get left behind.
from another 71y/o white woman. Been here on DU for 20 yrs., and both women and men here were responsible for helping me keep my sanity during that time. It has been particularly hard coming here (Oklahoma*) from one of the most interesting places on the planet (Japan). I so much appreciate all of you!

(2,731 posts)for every black, Asian, Hispanic, Native American and other person of color who rose up, overcame barriers to vote, and voted to save this democracy. For every young person, many even too young to vote but not too young to help; for the countless men and women of every age, race, and religion who worked tirelessly to achieve this amazing moment: Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Bless you one and all.
I want to also thank some who we sometimes fail to appreciate, the strong Republicans who put country over party and made every effort to defeat Donald Trump. And I want to thank Bernie Sanders as well, who chose not to run a destructive third party campaign that would have undoubtedly cost us the election, but instead understood the existential threat and fought to defeat Trump as well (along with many Berners). Thank you!!!

(11,949 posts)I can remember in elementary school when there was hope we could unify the races in the south. Schools in Baton Rouge had not that long been desegregated. My FDR Democrat dad from rural Louisiana used to talk about all the things white and black southerners had in common. Religion, food, manners etc. and he thought we were getting there. To a point of mutual respect. Then Reagan came along and formally adopted Nixons Southern strategy. The die was cast causing 40 more years of racial strife. Racism was again officially sanctioned by one of the political parties. That has not changed.

(1,654 posts)This 78 year old white woman wants to thank you, too. I've felt so helpless at times, like I was fighting against a big wave. I felt it especially when seeing the Trump Trains and those awful confederate flags flying from trucks with the American flag. It felt like so many of my countrymen were infected with Trumpism and we would never have any policy to fight the Covid virus. It felt relentless. But it felt so good today, to know that so many people were being good citizens and were voting to save our country from the fascist would be dictator. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
