Profile In Courage

For many years since the birth of the Tea Party I have been telling people that the rhetoric of the far right is the same as described in John F Kennedy's book, Profiles in Courage. John Calhoun and his pro slavery followers were the ones talking about the end of the union. When Lincoln was elected it came to full froth and the ensuing 4 years of war and death were the cost of the hate of this faction of the country. Sam Houston the hero of Texas did not support secession from the Union. Texans who had made him their first President and was serving as Governor at the time the war broke out voted him out of office when he refused to secede. His life was threatened and he was forced to give up his role of Governor. He was called every name in the book except by the name that he was first given, that of hero of Texas.

Yesterday the entire world let out a deep breath as this country was saved from a despot. We do not know yet the entire breadth of his tyranny against the union but we do know that he sought to rule as a dictator. His election was made possible by the same rhetoric that made 4 years of Civil War and 600,000 deaths a reality. 40 years of hate radio and TV have convinced 70 million Americans that his behavior is OK. That it is OK to shred the constitution and it's protections. It is OK to watch 250,000 die from an infectious disease and then blame it on someone else. It is OK to call fascists "good people".

Joe Biden was not my first choice in this election but I could not be prouder of his courage and character. Yesterday for the first time in 4 years my shoulders relaxed a bit as I watched the numbers change for Pennsylvania and heard the networks call it. His speech last night showed those who are capable of listening to his profile in courage. We have pulled this country back from the brink of falling into an autocracy. If you voted for this ticket then I thank you for your courage.
