Thoughts on DC and Puerto Rico statehood?

The House has already passed a bill for DC statehood and the referendum in Puerto Rico just passed. I’m wondering how long it would take for both of them to write and pass a state constitution. The potential for four more Democratic senators is very appealing.

The process historically speaking has taken anywhere from 3 to 16 months although it probably would take a bit longer in the 21st century. Still it is deader than a doornail without a Blue Senate. There is a zero percent chance that any Republican will vote in favor of it. In fact there won't even be a vote. Mitch will ensure there is zero chance that there is even a vote or debate on it in the Senate.

that PR would yield two Democratic senators but I still believe that statehood is the right thing.

50 states is a nice, even number. So we need to free up two states.

Florida has to go. I say we cut a canal across the Florida panhandle and let the rising ocean waters reclaim the state back to nature. Sorry to any DUers who live there.

Do we really need a North Dakota and a South Dakota? We can combine those into one state: "Dakota".

Granted, Republicans will continue to twist Democratic narratives. We just have to untwist them, for instance: "unpacking the courts."

Wyoming has 579,000. P.R. and D.C. have more people than Cheney's state, but zero representation
in Congress, even though they are American citizens.

While a clear majority just supported statehood in a referendum, there were still 48% opposed.

Our union is a perpetual one, there would be no getting out for them if the political winds changed, and it would forever foreclose the possibility of self-determination.
