I heard a piece by a local NPR station about Penn State earlier this week.

Out-of-state students (not a small % of the population - lots of PSU students are from NJ) would NOT have been able to vote using out-of-state licenses as ID, even if they were officially registered in Centre County. And studnets didn't know that.

And student who started college before this stupid law was passed would not be able to vote with Penn State IDs either, unless they made a separate trip to a very specific office that issued stickers to update the ID with an expiration date.

The process was unnecessarily difficult, and you can't tell me they weren't TRYING to disenfranchise students.

it was the State Supreme Court that sent this back down to the lower Court which resulted in this ruling so the likelihood the State Supreme Court would take it up again is slim to none, imo.

this word out, that IDs won't be required.

Went to an Obama Campaign meeting last night in TX. They said that Repugs were perpetuating the myth that they needed ID to suppress the vote of those who don't have one - despite the law not being in effect.

We can't let this brief victory make us complacent. It would be good for we democrats to start a movement immediately after the election to educate voters on getting a picture ID and insuring that they are in good standing on voter lists.

From the article:

"In his ruling, which is widely expected to be appealed to the Supreme Court, Simpson ordered an injunction that would target the portion of the law that deals with provisional ballots.

As written, the law said voters who do not bring proper photo ID on Election Day can cast a provisional ballot. They would then have six days to bring in the required photo ID for their votes to count."

The provisional ballot requirement has been put on hold by this decision.

in 6 days and that their votes won't be counted. He also says that those provisional ballots would have created 2 classes of voters.

So the harm is as a result of implementing this law.

He had to ensure that these wicked voter suppression laws would stick in Ohio, Florida and Pennsylvania. Romney needs to win all three states if he wants to be president. Without Pennsylvania it will be very difficult for him to win.

30. Pennsylvania Democrats know how to run a good election and will swamp the Philly polls with folks
Tue Oct 2, 2012, 12:03 PM

I remember about 10 years ago I worked the polls up in the NE section of Philly, an area that had a large Russian immigrant population.

We had voter ballots in Russian to give to those legal voters who needed help. The Republicans hired a few translators who spoke Russian and said they were to assist voters in the voting booth.

Really?

You're not allowed to take anyone into a voting booth with you other than perhaps a small child or infant. Republicans were hoping if they sent translators into the booths with these voters whose english was not good that the translators would help them pull the levers for republicans.

The first time we were able to stop it and we called the problem into HQ.

Next time it happened (with a new translator, I think a new one was sent ever 30 minutes after the last one was chased away) there were 2 lawyers on hand to make sure it didn't happen, one who spoke Russian.

The fact that the ballots were in Russian and confirmed by both parties as accurate was enough for those voters needed helping in the voting booth.

Pennsylvania goes democrat when we know the voters can vote without someone fucking with them or their votes.

These folks know that "Obama" is on the ballot and they will be there. My issue is with other areas of the state that are red but have poor little "blue" folks living there trying to vote. We need every vote that we can get. The whole state Assembly is up for election right now (and the odd state Senatorial districts) and turnout can actually impact this state legislature to put Corbett, Turzai, and their thugs in check.
