Anybody have some suggestions?

(145,046 posts)This season the show hired Ken Jennings and I suspect that Jennings is the front runner for this show
ProfessorGAC
(64,960 posts)If he took on an air of someone who knows all the answers, people would believe it. He knew a huge % of the answers while under the pressure of playing the game.
But, I'm ok with pretty much anybody.
They hit a home run with Alex. I'd give them another at-bat. It's different people to be sure, but the ethos is probably unchanged.
CTyankee
(63,900 posts)but we love Ken a lot, and he is a co-producer of the show, so that's something to consider. And people know him from his past successes.
Chainfire
(17,519 posts)but Alex was so damn smart because he had the answers in his hand. I was under the impression that they had been grooming Jennings for years for the job. I quit watching Jeopardy because I could no longer look at Alex without wanting to ask about the three Ps. What's the three Ps Alex......
CTyankee
(63,900 posts)word question. I get it that he spoke French, but damn, his German and Italian pronunciations were extremely well done (now, I am guessing at the German but I do know Italian and he was spot on).
Of course, he knew the questions already, but he could pull it off like he knew them himself, Pretty good acting, no?

(10,885 posts)James Holzhauer would be another choice, if we're choosing from previous winners. I like Julia Collins also, but she needs to be more outgoing.
Bucky and the bartender wouldn't rank in my top thousand. Bucky has the personality of a used car salesman, and Austin is just obnoxious.
ETA: Just added Jennifer Granholm to my list. See #33 below.

(31,963 posts)Not government policy making. TV shows need to have people watching them or they go off the air. If a host doesn't have charisma and is likeable people will not watch.

I hope he's not the choice. He turned the show from a fun game you could play along with at home to a show where the contestants became more important than the game.
I don't watch to see winning streaks or big paydays. I watch to test my own knowledge.

Shes funny, shes telegenic, shes very experienced in the quiz/game show format, and shes got a degree in mathematics from Oxford, so intellectually shes all there.
Look up an episode of Nine Out of Ten Cats Do Countdown to see her in action the whole show is amazingly funny.
Edited because Im an imbecile.

(101,294 posts)(it was the very first programme the channel showed, in the early 80s, and is still running).
If you want someone from the BBC, there's Victoria Coren Mitchell:
In her broadcasting career, she has presented several BBC documentaries on topics on everything from language and surrealist art to Mary Poppins and P.L. Travers. She is also a regular on Radio 4, having previously hosted Fourth Column and Off The Page.
For someone in the funny business, Victoria has a surprisingly good poker face. She became first woman to win an event on the European Poker Tour, the first player to win both a televised professional tournament and a celebrity televised tournament and the first player to win two European Poker Tour Main Events. She even won the tidy sum of £500,000 from winning her first European Poker Tour title in London in 2006.
...
She has also written several books, including Love 16, Once More, With Feeling and For Richer, For Poorer: A Love Affair with Poker and still writes columns for The Observer, GQ and Elle magazine.

(10,885 posts)but she's already very gainfully employed in her move to California in recent years. I always enjoy her appearances on CNN, and would like to see her in a very public spotlight again.
I'm fairly certain, however, that this probably isn't on her bucket list.

(10,885 posts)with her hyperthymesia, a"highly superior autobiographical memory", whereby she can recall every moment of her life from birth? A condition like that would mesh well with the Jeopardy! content.

(4,547 posts)From the obvious way they treat Ken Jennings with such reverence that he would follow in Alexs footsteps.
Again, not sure.
The show doesnt seem to want to have a typical TV personality type. They are more interested in someone who treasures knowledge and a certain level of geekness.
From what I could see, Alex was quite fond of Ken. Yea he had fun with James and Austin (was he the bartender from NYC?), but he seemed to revere Ken.
Anyway, lets give it a few beats.
RiP Alex, you really gave it your all in the show and really fought your cancer. Say Hi to RBG for us!! The world of intellectuals will not be the same without you two.
