3. oh that's a terrible, terrible narrative. shades of carter in 1976.

carter was just the right man the country needed after watergate. very clearly ethical, prudent, deliberate, calm, statesmanly, etc.

it helped us get passed watergate in a way ford inherently couldn't, not only due to being from the same party, owing his presidency to nixon, and ffs, pardoning the dirtbag.

carter helped heal us as a nation.

but by 1980, having helped the nation get past watergate and get past vietnam, boring and calm and reasonable and ethical and so on no longer was of any great interest, and reagan clobbered him.


so while "normal" and "boring" seem great *now*, and, don't get me wrong, they *are* great, *now*.

but that narrative will stick and it will *not* play well in 2022 or 2024.
