The wannabe-subtle racism of the "why bring race into it" complaint.

Just read a DU thread I won't link to, in which a commenter advanced the "good, but why bring race into it" argument.

::sigh::

At the lowest possible reading level I can manage, here it is:

In America, no one "brings" race into anything. If the last four years have shown anything, it is the clear truth that here, race is in everything already, and has always been there.

That's it.

Those who swim comfortably and obliviously in the sea of white privilege use this stupid noise, along with the "I don't see color" stupid noise, to avoid the discomfort of having to look beyond the bubble of blissful ignorance.

I will reiterate:

This is America.

Race is in everything.

Just because you don't (won't) see it, doesn't mean it isn't there.

You're either genuinely ignorant, in which case, kindly seek some education in the spirit of patriotism and building a better America, or you're acting stupid out of irritation with having your comfy denial breached, and lashing out with the inherent racism that comes with being a white American, in which case fuck off and find another message board to whine on.

That is all.

disgustedly,
Bright

I saw it and agree with you. This is the USA. With our history, how can one not see race is in everything?

I had to have my head held under the pump (metaphorically) to learn better, and I still forget and slip, because I have that luxury, being white. Virtually everything about my existence as an American is privileged to not have to think about my melanin level and what it means for the risks I'm exposed to, the opportunities available to me, the responses of others to my presence wherever I go, etc.

That's the problem.

It's too damn' easy for white people not to see race in anything, much less everything.

I'm trying.

determinedly,
Bright

You've described my family of origin very well indeed. My comment was more a feeling of exasperation than lack of understanding. I have a boss who persists with the "I'm color blind BS" even though several of us have tried to get through to him. Once again, you're absolutely right.

... and generations of taking not having to think about race for granted.

So I try to be patient.

But I do kinda expect people posting on a message board like DU to have taken a few steps in that direction already.

Unless, of course, they want to be intentionally provocative.

Bright

Do you not realize the irony of your "trashing" a DUer because you don't like posts that "call out" DUers?

That's what "trashing a thread" does. Gives everyone else in the thread a chance to discuss the trash-er behind their back, so to speak.

Or, uh, 'call them out' or whatever.

Isn't that nice of Demsrule86?

Argues a kind of trust and confidence in their fellow DUers that entirely belies their own actions.

Never forget: The opposite of "irony" is "wrinkly".

nonsequiturially,
Bright
