Another mask story, darn it

I've been good about staying in and masking up if I go out, even to outside places like the atm or gas pump. Even to go walk my grand dog, I wear a disposable mask under my balaclava, long pants, fleece jacket, boots and plastic gloves. I saw that our local Dollar Tree once again had a mask required notice on the door. The last time I was in there was the beginning of Sept. and since there was no mask requirement, I decided not to go back in. I thought I'd be okay for a quick trip and restock on supplies for the next haul. I had been out to walk the dog, and I was fully dressed to minimize contamination.

When I went in, all the people I saw were masked, and I relaxed a little. I am always polite, and give people space and time in the aisles, so I ended up being in there longer today. I got some cards and headed to the far side of the back of the store to get the frozen item I wanted. Guess while I was looking at cards, the dimwit parade from the Twilight Zone stopped in. There was a guy with no mask in front of the frozen food cases, talking to a clerk who was masked. Poor me, I thought since the clerk actually started the conversation, she was going to tell him to put a mask on. But no, she asked him if he was going get the Pupperoni for himself. He went into a long description about how he had eaten Pupperoni, and that it was too rich. Then, he talked about a friend who had also tried and also said it was too rich. Then he mentioned the son of a friend who had eaten Pupperoni by mistake, and blamed his mother. I am about 30 feet away, able to hear, and losing patience as the clerk chortled over the endless chain of anecdotes where adult humans were eating dog treats and discussing the flavor. The guy had finally moved the hell our of my way, so I got my peppers and headed for the checkout, seeing 2 woman with no masks, and realizing my shopping experience had gone to hell. There was another unmasked man walking past the checkout, and I muttered out loud. He heard me but I don't care. So, I won't go back. I hope I've learned my lesson. There are people out there who eat dog treats on purpose or by accident and are too stupid to wear a mask.

Dollar Tree and Kroger are the stores that most seem to not care if employees or customers are masked. I’ve literally sent dozens of photos to the health department and nothing changes. We’ve started getting groceries at Giant Eagle. They do a great job with COVID precaution enforcement, but our grocery bill is about 30% higher than at Kroger.

The only store I went into more than once was Dollar Tree. Because they don't have options I can use. It is close to my house and I've enjoyed shopping there and browsing. Our Kroger is really good about masking. I use the curbside pickup, and see people wearing masks headed in, taking them off when they come out, and the clerks are always masked when they bring out my order. I wear a mask all the way home if there is anything put in the car.

I am planning to try shopping at Giant Eagle, because I can't get a few things I really need.

I don’t know what it is with Dollar Stores.

There’s a Dollar Store not far from me, and during the summer one time, I needed 3 things so I masked and gloved up and went in there. Was standing in line, everyone 6ft. apart. There was only one cashier working. She was ringing up the guy ahead of me, and I noticed that the store had installed plexiglas barriers on the counters, which was good, but the clerk herself had her mask down under her nose, and continued to cough like every ten seconds, turning her head. I put my items down and walked out. I don’t care if I elicited some snarky remarks. I suppose she thought since her mouth was covered, it was okay.
