Tata served in the United States Army for 28 years, retiring in 2009 with the rank of brigadier general.[13][14] From 2006 to 2007, he was Deputy Commanding General of the 10th Mountain Division in Afghanistan.[12][15] Tata served two tours of duty at Fort Bragg in the 82nd Airborne Division. As the Chief of Plans for the 82nd Airborne Division, Tata led the planning effort for Operation Uphold Democracy.[16] He also was brigade commander in the 101st Airborne Division and Deputy Commanding General of the 10th Mountain Division.[12]

Operation Uphold Democracy was a military intervention designed to remove the military regime installed by the 1991 Haitian coup d'état that overthrew the elected President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. The operation was effectively authorized by the 31 July 1994 United Nations Security Council Resolution 940.
