What a stupid comment for a US Senator to make. Don't count California and our GDP goes down by 15%. You going to make that up in Indiana?

Sen. Mike Braun on a conference call said Trump and Biden tied the popular vote if you take out California. I planned to ask him whether California was still part of our country and what the point was of making divisive statements like that, but the call was cut short. So it goes

The economy of California is the largest in the United States, boasting a $3.2 trillion gross state product as of 2019.[9] If California were a sovereign nation (2019), it would rank as the world's fifth largest economy, ahead of India and behind Germany

Canada would not be Canada anymore - it would be the US with a (somewhat) reduced fraction of Trump voters (the US population for those states would swamp Canada's 37 million).

Quebec in particular would never agree - the French speaking population would be even more overwhelmed. And, switch French as an official language for Spanish???.

How 'bout maybe a few border states instead (but only if Trump voters are excluded).

if the scenario you describe actually happened, Quebec probably would separate or, disappear as the so-called distinct society but, as you point out, a land bridge would be there (which BTW is IMO the main reason to keep Quebec in the Federation now).

Living in Alberta myself, although we have more than our share of right-wingers, I think the majority would go along (not that Canada as a whole would ever agree to it). Fun to think about though....

said that Hillary lost the country by 1M votes if you take out California.

That’s not the way it works! California is part of this union, like it or not.

If you get to take out California, I get to take out Texas. You wanna take out NY, I’ll take out Florida. We can play this game ALL FUCKING DAY!

It keeps non-producing Red States like Alabama, Mississippi, etc., from going under.

So go ahead, assholes, take out California, take out New York, and watch the whole teetering mess come crashing down.

California’s also under-represented: population
40 million, only 2 senators. Contrast with Red States Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, the Dakotas, Nebraska, Kansas and Iowa: 10 states, 17 million population combined, 20 total senators.

Or the Canadian parliament for that matter.

Ridings are of set size and the more population you have, the more ridings you have. The Canadian Senate is well neutered as well.

54. California Senators are 6-8 times more important than you, Mike Braun
Tue Nov 10, 2020, 05:36 PM
Nov 2020

If population matters, Feinstein and Kamala Harris are 6 times as important as you, representing 39 million vs 7 million.

If GDP matters, their state’s GDP is $2.89 trillion vs Indiana’s paltry $344 billion.

If land matters, the state they represent is 4.5 times as big. But how can you compare Yosemite and Joshua Tree and Santa Cruz and Monterrey and Muir Woods and La Jolla and Napa Valley to.. cornfields and flatland?

Californians pay $472 billion in taxes to the federal government while Indiana residents pay $61 billion, which again is about 8 times as much. Indiana is rated as 8th most dependent State while California is 44th (or the 7th LEAST dependent state). Money goes one way.

Not to mention Caltech and UCLA and Stanford and Berkeley and CalPoly and....
Vs... Purdue and Norte Dame..

Just what do you represent, Mike Braun? The state of stupidity?

A Senator from INDIANA should be grateful to states like California, not DISMISSIVE.

I’m so sick of this bullshit looking down on blue states and republicans thinking they can belittle them or ignore them. This is part of the problem.
