Who will be Kamala Harris' replacement in the Senate? It's up to Gov. Gavin Newsom to decide and his shortlist reportedly includes London Breed, Ro Khanna, Barbara Lee, Xavier Becerra, Karen Bass, Libby Schaaf, Katie Porter and more.
"SNIP....
SAN FRANCISCO -- Sen. Kamala Harris is getting a big promotion, set to be the next vice president and the first woman to hold the job. That leaves Gov. Gavin Newsom with a big task: filling her job.
The California governor gets to pick Harris' replacement -- and it's a coveted job. Who's in line for the senate seat?
Sen. Harris is the only Black woman in the U.S. Senate, so there's some pressure on Newsom to pick another Black woman (you'll see a few on the list below), or at the very least a person of color.
Here's what we know about some of the top contenders.
Mayor London Breed
The San Francisco mayor received national attention for her handling of the early coronavirus pandemic, when the city and much of the Bay Area were the first in the nation to announce a shelter-in-place order. She also joined protesters over the summer in the wake of George Floyd's death and cut the city's funding to the police and sheriff's department, reinvesting that $120 million in the Black community.

We need better outreach to Latinos and elevating him would help with this IMO.

These yahoos are always gathering signatures to recall Democratic governors in California.
It is a permanent occupation for some.

Not a big fan. She is more complicated than first blush - see above. Look up her affordable housing moves; it is complicated so maybe... I like most of her politics but somehow I get a weird feeling. And another mayor leap frogging.
Rep. Barbara Lee - Barbara Lee has represented Oakland and its surrounding cities in Congress since 1998 and has always been one of the body's most progressive members. She was notably the only member of the House to vote against the use of military force after the September 11 attacks.
Love her. Would be happy to see her as a Senator.
Rep. Ro Khanna - Another Bay Area member of congress, Khanna represents Silicon Valley. He was a vocal supporter of Sen. Bernie Sanders in the 2020 presidential campaign. When ABC7 News asked him if he'd like to fill the soon-to-be-open Senate seat, he demurred. "I think there are a lot of great people out there, but I what I hope is that the governor picks someone clearly with progressive views," said Khanna.
I am not a fan of most Bernista politicians (even though I am further Left...). But he means well.
Rep. Karen Bass - Karen Bass represents part of Los Angeles County in Congress and is chair of the Congressional Black Caucus. She was reportedly on the short-list as a contender for Joe Biden's running mate, but perhaps him picking Harris opens another door for Bass.
Good! She is awesome.
Mayor Libby Schaaf - The Oakland mayor of two terms is also being considered, reports Politico. "I am feeling so hella proud of Kamala Harris," she told ABC7 News over the weekend while she celebrated the Biden-Harris victory near Lake Merritt.
Never heard of her. Another mayor leap frogging? No.
Xavier Becerra - Becerra could follow in Harris' footsteps going from Attorney General of California to U.S. Senate, if he's picked by Newsom. Before becoming A.G. he represented Los Angeles in the House of Representatives.
I think Breed hates him so I don't know.
Alex Padilla - Padilla has remained a steady force as Secretary of State, overseeing an election unlike any other. Padilla worked with Newsom to send every registered Californian a mail-in ballot amid the coronavirus pandemic, and repeatedly assured people voting by mail was the safest method in 2020.
Don't know about him but sounds ok.
Rep. Adam Schiff - Schiff, who represents part of Los Angeles County, made a national name for himself (and landed himself on the president's bad side) when he led the impeachment hearings as chair of the House Intelligence Committee. Before being elected to Congress, Schiff worked in the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles.
Brilliant guy but replacing Harris with a white dude won't fly.
Robert Garcia - The Long Beach mayor would be the first openly gay Latino senator from California, if he were picked. Before holding local office, he was a college professor.
Never heard of him. Sounds interesting. Another mayor leap frogging? No.
Rep. Katie Porter - The Orange County Democrat is seen as a rising star in the party. She recently went viral for calling out a pharmaceutical CEO in a House hearing for raising cancer treatment drug prices while receiving a large bonus.
She is a bad ass. Love her but I do think a POC is a better idea. Although is a POC is not chosen I would pick Porter.

Padilla is my favorite, even though he was not as forceful as I'd have liked in dealing with the GOP's fake ballot boxes. I like Becerra (wish Clinton had picked him for VP). Ro Khanna's biggest assest is that he's in a dark blue district and would almost certainly be replaced by a Democrat. I admire and respect Lee, but she's getting on in years - I think the seat needs someone younger and more feisty: Porter would be ideal, but her seat is in a red district.
One name not coming up is Kevin de Leon, who lost the last senate race to Feinstein (we had 2 Democrats running): he has potential and was IMHO just in the wrong race.

(24,885 posts)The smallest population in a state I think is Wyoming at 600k or so. It annual budget (I did look this up) is $7.9 billion. Not many municipalities with 600,000 people have 8 billion dollar budgets. Plus most local governments are council-manager and not executive empowered mayor. So the mayors do more politicking and little budgeting and management of people. No states are manager - legislature...wait the governor is the manager.
Also running a statewide campaign is radically different from running a township campaign. I would take a governor of a small state over a mayor (and in each city mayors have different powers) almost all of the time. The taxation and revenue vs. expenditures are different worlds. And a person that goes to to the US House, or senate, gets a totally different view on national issues than any mayor would.
Ok I'll admit it. I don't think that most (all?) mayors should leapfrog to president. And in fact I don't think that's happened in the US. It has (as PM which is different) in the UK though. Boris.
Senate? Maybe I guess.
Looked up Kevin de Leon and he was/is president pro tempore of the California State Senate? He could certainly be a good appointment to the Senate with that type of experience.
