(27,823 posts)Along with Senior Chief Thomas. One of the most INTERESTING characters I met, while in the Navy. He had the most amazing green eyes and was gruff as can be, on the outside, but you knew he cared deeply for the students, program and Navy. (I just realized that the poor Polaroid photo has 'suffered' over the years!)

(150,871 posts)I interrupted my college education and enlisted when my draft notice came. The USAF treated me to a year at Syracuse University in a total immersion Russian Language program. Cool beans.

(150,871 posts)very similarly. One advantage of the Syracuse school is that the university credits transferred seamlessly when i returned to college after my time of enlistment. Full credit without any questions. Not that I continued to use the language, of course. i didn't, but those credits let me finish up much more quickly, since they served as a full-scale minor in Russian language studies.
I did, though, enroll at a University of California campus as a Russian Major, but opted to go another direction soon after, for various reasons.

(8,103 posts)I would have to brush up, as well. It would come back. You and I are on a list somewhere!

(39,698 posts)At least, that's what that asshole, Rumsfeld, told us dumb draftees
Rumsfeld said draftees "were sucked into the intake, trained for a period of months and then went out, adding no value, no advantage really, to the United States Armed Services over any sustained period of time, because (of) the churning that took place -- it took an enormous amount of effort in terms of training and then they were gone."
We veterans of the Army of the United States (AUS) were sure steamed when that ass said those words and fortunately my drinking buddy, Agent Mike, talked me out of acting on what I was thinking at the time.
