Which come to think of it, is quite possible.

(35,267 posts)Proof is needed for conviction
When the guy admitted to taking the money to tell the lie that is a crime
Pinning it on the individual(s) may be harder

At the very least the GoFundMe people should withhold the money due to fraud on his part.

(5,812 posts)The act of the postal worker clearly broke the law with the making of the false charges. The Republicans that paid him conspired to have him do this. Any conspiracy that breaks a law is generally chargeable as a felony.
All of them have their asses in a sling IMO.

(33,643 posts)You'd have to show that they approached him and told him to lie and set up a gofundme, and then promised he'd be paid by them for doing so, then they paid him thusly. Could be tough to prove.
Not saying that DIDN'T happen, but entirely possible it happened in a different order.
Be interesting to see who the large donors were, however.

(52,126 posts)Filing a false statement surely is a crime, but an ordinary letter isn't a sworn/affirmed statement, which includes fine print near the signature line saying i understand its perjury if this is a lie.
So I'm not clear on what he actually did, and if it amounts to a false statement that would be illegal.
And if so, if he was paid to commit a crime, then presumably both making and accepting the payments would be crimes as well.
