Off Topic: Sing while you can

I am interested in yodeling (quit laughing,) and as I listen to examples, it occurs to me what good exercise it is for the lungs.

From there I thought, people need to sing. Sing anything. Sing to yourself, to your children, your spouse, your friends...don't save it for the marches, or...sing now. It doesn't matter if you're any good. You don't have to be _____ (fill in the blank with the name of your favorite singer) to have it help your brain and your lungs. If you can't sing in your situation, from shyness or bothering someone, then hum your blues away. You can do that.

Sing to your cat. She'll just look at you. No criticism. She'll offer an opinion when she is hungry. Perfect.

Arlo and Pete teaching the audience to yodel. Also, Eddy Arnold does "Cattle Call" which has a lot of yodeling in it.

Basically, the Cowboy Nation requires you to know how to yodel. Even if your goats run away.

Never did it before. But my band couldn’t find anyone to do it, so I took it on. And, yeah, it’s pretty awesome!

What is the name of your band? Record yourself and put it up on Amazon to sell it! What a trip that would be for you! I think this could be a good side gig for someone half way decent.

Endless Wire by Gordon Lightfoot

I ain't got nothin' to hide
My mind is an endless wire
I got both feet on the ground
I ain't got no one for hire

I ain't got a thing to show
My lines have all expired
So don't go foolin' around
And set my wheels afire

Down in the dark of a burnt out soul
There's a few good second hand dreams
Deep in the dark of a heavenly night with you

Down in the black of a bottomless hole
There's a few good second hand scenes
Deep in the dark of the heavenly blue
Where the sea runs green

I ain't got nothin' to give
My life is an endless climb
My love's a paperback dream
I don't have nothin' but time

I ain't got a thing to show
I don't know my own name
So don't go foolin' around
And set my wheels afire

Down in the dark of a burnt out soul
There's a few good second hand dreams…

I wish I could tell you which style I liked the best, but this is the first time I heard a demonstration. I actually have heard of throat singing before, but know absolutely nothing about it. It was very interesting.

I must say, my Goffin parrot responded to it!

It was all about finding where the natural break in your vocal range is and how to control it.

When I listen again, I will keep this in mind.

When I was a girl, the teachers said that if you were singing on stage and your voice broke, just quickly resume singing like it didn't happen. I heard this happen to a boy, and he did beautifully. But, I never forgot it. Poor boy, lodged in my memory forever...

I'm afraid my natural range is ...sing...(cough)...sing...(cough, cough)...but with great enthusiasm!

If I ever end up in the hospital, I plan to scare the crap out of the nurses with yodeling. "Covid dementia" doncha know.

In that neither of us had any. The family story is that she couldn't sing her children to sleep because we'd start crying.

We all have good ears - almost perfect pitch, but no singing capabilities. Some of the family are very good instrumentalists - just not vocalists.

There was a famous song writer, Burt Bacharach (sp) who used to be on TV and would sing his songs while playing the piano. I was a child, and I used to think "that guy can't sing! What's he doing this for!" but people enjoyed him tremendously.

So, maybe your family has some additional hidden talents that you should try for? You never know! Instead of The Platt Family Singers you could be The Platt Family Song Writers!

Music is very, very important.

She was offered more than on music scholarship, but she opted for the scientific route and got her PhD in neuropathology. Both her sons inherited the musical ability - one graduated from the Berkeley School of Music in Boston and he and his wife now have positions at the New England Conservatory. His brother does casual recording and production of pieces for friends.

I still enjoy music and while I can't play or sing, I can hear when it is perfectly performed. Listening to badly tuned instruments drives me up the wall and I hate live concerts not only because that happens too often but when it is well done, I'd rather hear the music than the crowds.

My creativity took a different direction - I do fine needlework and design my own pieces. I originally was going to major in art but the approach to it when I started college in 1970 was far too unstructured for my tastes, so I majored in anthropology and library science with the plan of working in a museum. Instead I bred horses. Go figure.

I'm going to see if I can buy this somewhere. The cover was a hoot.

Part of the yodeling sounded like something I have, but for some reason I can't think of it right now. I'll find it.

It never occurred to me to visit You Tube. Thank you for taking the time! That was fun!

Before covid, I sang with a chorus at the local college, but it was cancelled when covid came. I also sang karaoke regularly, before covid.

I am 74 years old. I hope I survive until I can sing in public again.

It is sad that so many people feel they don't have the right to sing unless they are a professional. If you want to sing, please sing as loud as you want to. If I am lucky enough to hear you, I will applaud!
