1. When the rise of Nazism happened, Nazis were not all 6 foot tall super soldiers who carried guns. They were the nice old lady next door, the house mother who plays with her kids, the store clerk who would give you free stuff, etc.

Excellent thread. Also important: the "ironic trolling" and gaslighting we're seeing today from the alt-right is nothing new. Sartre wrote this in 1945:

Sartre describes racists as delighting “in acting in bad faith,” a term which he developed in his broader existential philosophy. “[Bad faith] is a lie you tell yourself,” says McBridge. “You pretend you’re doing something authentically when in fact you’re not. You know it at one level but not at another.”

That concept of "Bad Faith" is key to understanding the modern GOP.

They see no reason to act in Good Faith. You saw it in Pompeo's statement, made with a sly grin. Oh, you're hilarious, you fucking seditious traitor.

is worn as a badge of honor and they're happy to believe the most shallow, glossy, American exceptionalism version of history, despite any evidence to the contrary.

More importantly, many lack lthe ability to judge an argument's logic.

But, whatever truth or reason they may grasp, they're fine with lying about it if they think doing so will advance their power grabbing & money grubbing agendas.
