For his entire term, he has never shown much interest in governing. He has held much of the American electorate in contempt and has spent an incredible amount of time golfing and attending to his businesses. He could have done that without the burden of being POTUS. With the exception of holding rallies in front of his adoring cult (people he has absolutely no affinity with), what drives him to fight to maintain the Office?
His only motivation, IMHO, is the fear of a DOJ that he cannot control.
And, I think that also explains why the organized crime party behind him is also letting this charade continue. They are all in it together.

(10,553 posts)He has surrounded himself with yes people who told him he was going to win and hid any evidence to the contrary. When it didn't go his way, between his narcissism and his bubble of yes people he has some cognitive dissonance that is getting in his way of acting like a normal human.

(20,444 posts)He's going to steal them away from the traditional gop (which I think is awesome) and start his own media companies. He was planning on that when he ran: He just didn't think he'd win.
Also, he's trying to keep his ass out of prison.

Ongoing fund raising. 2024 is same deal
He profits off being president. For example gouging secret service forced to stay at his properties and renting golf carts.
Corruption comes as natural to him as breathing to normal people

I also think he is deluded to the point that he can somehow overturn the election at his will because he thinks his MAGA base will spring to protect him, and, I don't know...impress the Electoral College with boat parades or something like that.

(82,849 posts)Savannah Guthrie was talking to (I think) Claire McCaskill, and asked what the purpose of all these lawsuits was. I-think-McCaskill said bluntly, fund raising. Trump's making this pretense of legal challenges to raise funds from his supporters. What are those funds to be used for? My guesses: Maybe a run in 2024. Maybe to hire competent attorneys who can actually draft a pleading. Or maybe to get the funds he's going to need to flee the country.

(73 posts)...but I'd like to add one more.
Trump has done everything possible to erase what Obama accomplished as president.
It was petty revenge against Obama for the joke he made about Trump at the White House Correspondents Dinner way back 2011. If you don't think Trump could hold a grudge that long, think again.
If Trump doesn't get his second term, it will make him less of a president than Obama.
I'm sure that fact is eating him up inside.

(23,862 posts)Obama rightfully help Trump up to international ridicule that evening and he will never get over it. And he's only made it worse for himself as history will truly remember what a complete failure he was as a psuedo-President.
