Rinses are what give that "blue hair" look that people associate with their grandmothers. If the hair is blue, unintentionally, the process of applying the rinse has been done wrong. My grandma's wasn't done right once, so she had blue hair, and was FURIOUS.

women often used all kinds of rinses to accent their hair - browns, red, or black were popular. They usually lasted through several shampoos. If you didn't like it, it was no big deal, as it wasn't permanent, though you might need to wear a scarf for a few days! I can imagine how mad your grandmother must have been if her hair was actually blue.
