BULL FUCKING SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Speaking for myself -- the ONLY way I feel I can ever heal from what the Orange Piece of Shit did to this country and is to see him prosecuted to the max. If he gets to slide -- like he has done for all of his life -- what the hell!?!?!?!? The pain I watched so many endure -- and I know we can all list the atrocities of the Trump presidency so there no need to list the abuse he heaped on this nation. I hurt, physically hurt, from seeing the horrendous pain he caused so many in our nation...and for the suffering of immigrants, too. I spent the last four years of my life scared to see what the hell sickening, hell-bent, hateful and resentful acts Trump and his goons were perpetrating against those least able to protect themselves.
I am STILL resentful of Ford for pardoning Nixon. And...what Nixon did pales in comparison to the Orange Asshole.
A PRESIDENT OF THE U.S. IS NOT ABOVE THE LAW. PERIOD. END OF DISCUSSION. FUCK TRUMP AND FEED HIM PEANUTS!!!!! PUT HIM IN PRISON AND LET HIM SIT IN ISOLATION FOR THE REST OF HIS USELESS LIFE.

Though...☹️ call me lacking vision, but I just dont see prosecution happening. This is not based on any smarts or scholarship on my part, more a visceral reaction. I guess based on *almost* 60 years of being an American. I hope I am wrong. I am not infrequently surprised with people coming through with an action 180 degrees off what I expected. Maybe I need to get some different colored glasses.

The message is - you can get away with this shit if you're shrewd enough, slippery enough, and never give up or give in. And NEVER apologize OR admit you were wrong. If he's allowed to get away unpunished, without having to face some pretty serious penalties for what he's done, it will telegraph unmistakably that this shit is okay. Somebody even more weasely than donald is bound to come along someday and maybe out trump trump. After all, there's that rather pointed phrase attributed tp P.T. (115,661 posts)he shouldn't have done it and it still pisses me off. I think Biden should stand back and let the DoJ (under new management, of course) go where the evidence leads them, and if they find they have a prosecutable case, go for it. Presidents can't be prosecuted while in office, as the current policy has it; and if they aren't prosecuted after they leave office just because they had been a president and the nation needs to heal, blah, blah, blah, the presidency becomes a get-out-of-jail-free card that allows a president who commits crimes to get away with them, and fuck the rule of law and the idea that nobody is above it.

(17,862 posts)I know case law doesn't break that way, but I cannot believe that the Founding Fathers intended it to be a general absolution without admitting to specific crimes or at least stating which actions the pardon is intended for.
The one action those fleeing the draft took was refusal to be drafted. That widespread pardon only applied to that action. Bush's pardon of Iran-Contra suspects was specific to Iran-Contra.
Ford's pardon of Nixon was insanely broad. He used the justification that Nixon had already paid the ultimate price by giving up the Office of the President (BS he wasn't entitled to it) and that it would years until the legal proceedings ended (long past Nixon's political "life" .
Now, THEREFORE, I, GERALD R. FORD, President of the United States, pursuant to the pardon power conferred upon me by Article II, Section 2, of the Constitution, have granted and by these presents do grant a full, free, and absolute pardon unto Richard Nixon for all offenses against the United States which he, Richard Nixon, has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 20, 1969 through August 9, 1974.

(1,648 posts)Partly because Nixon was not made as an example and been prosecuted to the full extent of the law to scare the hell out those that carried on his twisted traits and spread throughout the Republican Party.
As George W. Bush would say: 'Fool me once.. can't be fooled again.'
Donald Dumbass tRUMP needs to be prosecuted and punished for everything he has done, and his family and underlings need the same fucking treatment. It needs to be a top priority with a Special Counsel separate from normal gov't functions to keep from bogging the U.S. Government down and taking up their time cleaning up the tRUMP/Republican shitfest... Also because EVERYTHING needs to be examined for wrongdoing, corruption, theft, and ill gotten positions with the Republican Party acting as a co-conspirator, and exposed to the American People. Every Shit Stain from tRUMP down connected to the Republican Cabal need to be fully prosecuted, severely punished, and persecuted from the U.S. Government forever and their followers need to be shamed as very Anti-American.
This country can never be redeemed until there is a reckoning for the illegal activity that has been taking place for years and possibly decades in elected* offices and possible judicial picks. No more covering shit up to just get along, because it ONLY invites dangerous escalation that was on the verge of destroying the United States forever.

It will drain the Trumps of resources, & donors should be wary of giving him their money to take care of his personal problems. On the other hand, he wouldn't be the first huckster cult leader to skim his followers like that.
A complete tax review of the Trumps, likewise. Let the state of NY run its course here, civil & criminal. IRS process? No problem. Perhaps unlikely to result in a prosecution, but might empty his pocketbook permanently.
Running a high quality CI investigation is absolutely essential. Who knows what might come of that. It will be ugly.
Generating more tit-for-tat karma? No good at all. And don't give this monster or his puppet masters any national forum for more of his pity partying. The new admin is going to have way too many problems to allow its limited ability to influence the public to be sucked up by dealing with the Trumps.
On the other hand, a federal pardon may not be all bad, no matter who administers it. I don't think you can pardon for future crimes. Once he's pardoned, he loses some 5th amendment protection, & remains vulnerable to perjury. In that case a complete federal examination of his administration is in order & he can put all his friends & family in prison and/or join them himself if he choses to lie. That should work well for everyone on the receiving end of it all.

Moreover Trump's followers. As many as possible need to be shown how they were duped. There must be repercussions, otherwise, this criminal behavior will go on and on.
Also, in prosecuting Trump, it may lead to a dissolution of his cult. Perhaps it might make him a martyr, but in prosecuting Trump, he will be eliminated as a serious candidate in 2024, and water down his influence on the Republican party.

(32,679 posts)Giving trump a pass is the easiest way to never receive my vote again. 300,000 to 500,000 Americans will die due to trump's criminal negligence. This doesn't even get to his other crimes and abuses of power. If he's not locked up, I'm 100% done.

(41,831 posts)The rest can sue him for civil since most likely he will be pardoned by Pence for Federal Crimes... but then the Judge in NY should give him a harsh sentence, he doesn't deserve to go free and we don't need him in politics again.

(31,970 posts)They have had his tax returns since the 1960s. Decades. Did he all of a sudden start evading taxes since he became president?

(41,831 posts)and I think Trump had admitted he didn't pay TAXES and how he scammed the system. Its not like as President he could be arrested.

(31,970 posts)If you are talking about the NYT articles, they do not allege he did anything illegal. Yes, he "scammed" the system by taking advantage of tax breaks that all corporations take advantage of. The NY IRS has known how much taxes he did or did not pay for decades. So has the federal IRS. They have had his returns. They are not secret. He has only been president since 2017. Why wasn't he arrested before?

(11,562 posts)I want to see him spend is final years in an orange jumpsuit...perhaps in a facility that would have been Arpaio-approved. Misery all day, every day.
I honestly believe that, not only does he deserve that and more, but that it would have a deterrent effect for future miscreants. If they know going in that there are no dire consequences coming their way, there is very little to keep them from going the Drumpf route...or even worse, if they can somehow find away to accomplish that.

(1,849 posts)He will try to pardon himself, but I hope they find a way to prosecute him federally. NY will get him but he should pay for crimes against the US. Could they issue a retroactive ruling that a president can not pardon himself, rescinding his pardon?
If he isn't prosecuted, the laws of karma will get him,!

(50,552 posts)Pence does not want to go down in history as the president whose only act while in office was to pardon the worst criminal to ever be elected to public office in this country.
This leads to a Trump self-pardon, which doesn't even begin to pass the smell test - you can't be your own judge, which is what a self-pardon amounts to. The courts will overturn such an atrocity...and then we go after him hard.
Tax will be the easiest way to lock him up, but you could pretty much open Title 18 to a random page and get a conviction on it.

Article II, Section 2The President shall be commander in chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the militia of the several states, when called into the actual service of the United States; he may require the opinion, in writing, of the principal officer in each of the executive departments, upon any subject relating to the duties of their respective offices, and he shall have power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment.

(4,448 posts)But I do highly suspect that Biden will take the path of not prosecuting Trump as well as quietly putting pressure on NY State to not do so as well.
Any trials of Trump would be coming up about the same time as the mid-terms. Just in time to energize the Repub base.
That's not what I want. It's just what I predict.
This country really doesn't prosecute ex-presidents. Just ask W and Nixon.

(4,533 posts)Supporters of the defeated and then jailed prime minister Yulia Tymoshenko hit the streets, civil war broke Ukraine apart, Russia exploited the chaos by invading and grabbing ports their military and industries wanted. The victorious Prime Minister fled for his life. Was jailing the defeated prime minister a good idea? Hell no. Punishing Tymoshenko, even if she was a crook, was a spectacular mistake which caused a huge number of lives, economic ruin. No one here ever agrees with me that jailing Trump could cost thousands of lives, enormous suffering by innocent people, and isnt worth it. If jailing Trump causes 10,000 innocent people to be killed, ten thousand families to suffer, a million people to lose their job, is it worth it? Look what happened in Ukraine. Fine him $500 million instead, or seize his property. Dont jail him.

(1,587 posts)prosecuted. There is also another reason. tRump desperately needs continued Russian financial support. For him to get that he has to remain relevant to Putin, therefore he has to be able to continue his chaos vendetta against America. It is possible full exposure of his many crimes will diminish his capabilities to do so. Alternatively it may do the opposite. Tough call, even without the many other political ramifications. Also outside possibility Putin will solve it if he concludes there are huge geopolitical benefits for him. Putin is loyal only to people he can use.
