(1,602 posts)Had Trump governed at any point in his presidency towards the middle, attempting to reach out to those on the other side of the aisle, had there been any degree of civility between the GOP and the Democrats, rather than near continuous streams of lies and mistruths, then I'd say that the Trumpsters may have gained a degree of sympathy as people who needed to be more fully considered within the governing process. That hope died about six months into Trump's presidency. All too many of the ones who did vote for him did so knowing full well that he had no interest in the remaining 58% of the population, and that, as far as Trump was concerned, they should all die.
Did you lose your coal mining job? Sorry, not sorry. There were alternatives out there for people to transition out to what would likely have been better-paying jobs, but they were too lazy to take those opportunities. Are your religious rights being trampled? When suddenly mosques and synagogues and temples start appearing in your towns and, rather than accepting them as people of faith you start to vandalize and firebomb them, then you have become a hypocrite. Don't like socialism? Turn off goddamn Fox "News" and spend some time varying where you get your facts from. Afraid they'll take your guns away? When you walk around with an assault rifle and use it to threaten or intimidate or threatens, hell, yeah, we'll take the damn things away from you.
This is not addressed to the poster. I have family in 'flyover country' and have watched them drink the koolaid, have argued vociferously for hours with them about waking up and seeing what's really happening. One of them worked with the National Guard, had a unit dispatched to California for firefighting until California ran out of budget, then everything was recalled, awaiting a National Emergency call from Trump ... that never came. I haven't talked to him lately, but I doubt he voted for Biden. Yet when Red States get hit with hurricanes or floods, there's Trump calling out the National Guard... only I doubt that now, when the race is over, he's likely to even care about them anymore.
So, at this point, after four years of their being jerks, if they should suddenly turn around with hat in hand, I'm going to be a lot more leery about helping them. Is that being a good Democrat? I don't know, but I have to admit that it might be a prudent Democrat at this stage.
