Washington, D.C. In a speech on the House floor in 2008, Rep. Todd Akin said doctors give "abortions to women who are not actually pregnant."
"You find that along with the culture of death go all kinds of other law-breaking: Not following good sanitary procedure, giving abortions to women who are not actually pregnant, cheating on taxes, all these kinds of things," Akin said in the speech, as captured on C-SPAN.
"All of these things are common practice," Akin continued, "but all of that information is available for America."
A C-SPAN video of the speech was uncovered Tuesday by Slate.

(15,245 posts)Dilation (or dilatation) and curettage (D&C) refers to the dilation (widening/opening) of the cervix and surgical removal of part of the lining of the uterus and/or contents of the uterus by scraping and scooping (curettage). It is a therapeutic gynecological procedure as well as a rarely used method of first trimester abortion.
Who in the hell is giving him medical advise? Why is he so obsessed with female medical issues?

(34,451 posts)without being pregnant. WOW!
What a buffoon--and this moran is on the Science & Technology Committee or whatever it's called in Missouri?!?
May the saints preserve us...
I had very heavy periods, cramping, etc. They did this once to remove the built up uterine lining.
I believe they also do D & C to remove uterine cysts. So, yeah, women who aren't pg, have "abortions" too. Do they want to ban this procedure too?

(15,245 posts)Biology must be frightening. As a male I will never again doubt women when they point out that there is a central issue of controlling women when the RW nut jobs spout such radical views. What is truly alarming that Akin seems to voice an organized agenda and explains talking points few would ever admit to in public. I am convinced that someone or something planted this I doubt he is an original source.

(41,210 posts)Perhaps the reference is to people who have a D & C for medical conditions; but that is necessary and is not an abortion.

(2,286 posts)they have absolutely no idea how a woman's body works and don't seem to consult actual doctors when forming their opinions.
As stated above, he is likely referring to a D&C, which is done for a variety of reasons. I guess women should just be made to suffer "the curse" for Eve's betrayal.
If there is no baby, wtf are you aborting!?!?!
