Ahead Of First Debate, NPR Poll Shows Romney Within Striking Distancehttp://www.npr.org/blogs/itsallpolitics/2012/10/03/162171197/on-eve-of-first-debate-npr-poll-shows-romney-within-striking-distance
Here is NPR's July poll:

Clearly, Romney is falling behind and moving within "striking distance."

Also, think about two concerns: complacency and the possiblity that Republicans will try to steal the election by suppressing the vote.
When I think back to 2004 and how close the polls were and how Bush solidified a 2-point lead in the last weeks, the narrative was written to justify the outcome. Kerry was ahead of Bush for most of July and August (http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/election_2012_vs_election_2004_eight_years_ago_today.html). The poll tampering, suppression, thuggery, vote switching, blackouts at polling places, inaccurate reporting and other anomalies didn't matter. The polls showed Bush ahead by two points. The problems were enough to warrant an investigation by commission, but in the end, none of that mattered. No one talks about that any more. They talk about how Bush led in the polls at the end.
