That sad part is the reality that there are this small minority of voters that decide elections and switch back and forth between parties and ideas. It's not that we have to appeal to some right wing nut jobs. It is that in election after election, we have to appeal to a 5 - 7% minority that can't decide, much less commit to a particular political idea.
