In new memoir, Obama confronts the 'racial anxiety' of Trump supporters
Former president Barack Obama has in the past subtly drawn attention to the racial resentment his successor peddles. One notable example was Obama appearing to endorse a Washington Post op-ed written by his former Black staffers criticizing President Trump for telling American lawmakers of color who are critical of his administration to go back to from wherever they came.
Ive always been proud of what this team accomplished during my administration, Obama tweeted while sharing the 2019 opinion piece about Trumps words, which were directed at Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), a Somali American, and other members of the Squad, a group of four liberal congresswomen of color. But more than what we did, Im proud of how theyre continuing to fight for an America thats better.
Obama has spoken less often about how millions of Americans supported Trump and his worldview because of their own racial anxiety. In his memoir, however, which will be released Tuesday, Obama talks clearly about how foundational the racially discriminatory worldview of millions of Americans was to helping Trump get elected.
After voters elected Obama as the first Black man to lead the United States, the fears that millions of Americans had about the direction of the country gave Trump a pathway to the White House in which he sought to calm those fears about a changing America. There were thousands of Americans who backed Obama who eventually went on to support his biggest critic.

Trump voters often say they like Trump because he speaks his mind. Translated: he says all the racist, sexist and homophobic shit they're afraid to say.
