I believe, very strongly, that voter suppression it akin to treason and should be thought of as such. This should also include how we deal with perpetrators.
My reasoning: The main thing keeping our democratic republic alive is access to elections for everyone who is eligible (similar to freedom of the press and the right to due process). It is, IMHO, our top individual right in this country. Deliberately taking voting access away from any citizen or group who legally should be able to vote, for any reason, is a subversive act.
At this point in time it seems like the legal consequences for anyone found to be tampering with this right is essentially a slap on the wrist. I believe it should instead be equated to treason. Not treason itself, which has a separate definition, but equal.
Any thoughts?
