12 million to lose federal unemployment benefits after Christmas: study
By Niv Elis - 11/18/20 08:20 AM EST
Twelve million people would lose federal benefits the day after Christmas if Congress does not pass extensions for key unemployment programs, according to a study by The Century Foundation, a progressive think tank.
It will be a crippling end to one of our darkest years.
Congress passed a slew of expanded benefits programs in the CARES Act, Marchs emergency COVID-19 relief bill. One program, Pandemic Unemployment Assistance, expanded eligibility to the self-employed and gig economy workers, a group that normally is not eligible.
The study released Wednesday estimated that 7.3 million people will be on the program when it expires the last week of December, and that 945,000 people will have run out of the benefit before that point.
Another program, Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation, provided an extension of benefits after the 26 weeks most states offer ran out. If that program expires at years end, 4.6 million workers would lose benefits. Another 3.5 million will have already used up the benefit before that point.

(68,539 posts)having to shut down due to the increased Covid infections...supposedly people get paid...but who knows...fucking GOP Senate will now kill Americans via starvation. Under Ohio law, we would not be eligible until next years for unemployment.

(67,102 posts)republican voters can't comprehend this is beyond understanding. They get so much propaganda, but lack the gumption to look around and understand what is going on. Many get screwed over by the GOP, they say thank you, and vote GOP again. The power given to Moscow Mitch is outrageous. The system has some flaws.

(19,024 posts)We shut down bars, restaurants (inside dining), and high schools. More strict shutdowns will be needed to save lives.
I don't think people get what we're about to go through, the previous shutdowns came with robust federal aid for workers and small businesses to get by on, there is nothing now. You're going to see people suffer so much more this time around. And thousands of bars and restaurants who scraped by before will close for good this time around.
Getting the virus under control earlier was the best to save these businesses, but without loans and help for them, they're all in jeopardy.
