(5,124 posts)In 2016, Democrats had their souls crushed. We knew there was no way trump beat HRC fair and square. What did Dems do?
They knitted pink pussycat hats, marched on Washington and record numbers of regular citizens got involved in the political process and ran for office, organized in their communities and registered new voters. Dems did not threaten poll workers, senators were not calling around to throw out votes, we didn't stall and prevent trump from taking office, there was an orderly transfer of power. These people wrap themselves in the flag and almost everything they do is Un American.
And mind you, we had evidence of Russia meddling with our election. The republicans have no proof. They are just lying.

From Snopes: This does not appear anywhere in his book. It may be what was in the back of his (so-called) mind but the quote is fictional. Stuff like this should be verified and referenced.

I couldn't find any way to contact anyone about correcting it, though.

(11,563 posts)made good points, and with a deeply-held conviction, that that stench should be removed from Twitter, permanently.
I used to be all for having his lunacy out in the open, for all to see. But the idea that 50% of Republicans polled believe that the election was literally stolen from him brought me up short.
I know it's not this simplistic, but let's agree, for the sake of argument, that the country is split down the middle, politically. That means that 25% of adult Americans really believe a conspiracy theory of that magnitude and idiocy.
And we all know at whose feet to lay an awful lot of that nonsense should be laid.

(9,895 posts)Look at how many adults profess to believe in angles, ghosts and religions - any of them, but especially the aggrieved Christians and their cosmic Jewish Zombie. A god who put sin into man on purpose so he would then have to sacrifice himself to himself in a blood sacrifice to remove what he put in man in the first place? Yeah...THAT sounds perfectly sane! By comparison, a Trumpian fantasy about rigged elections is at least as plausible if not infinitely MORE LIKLEY!
We have a moronic segment of the population made up of gullible fools, willing to suspend logic, reason and the scientific method as suits their mood or peccadillos or the needs of the moment for self-esteem. It's sad but true, the existence and acceptance of insane religious beliefs and other conspiracies, combined with a lack of critical thinking and stunted educations, primes the pump for people to accept equally insane and false proposals in other areas, usually with equal or greater ease.
"Unicorn thinking" infects this country - or at least 25-30% of it - and the media and corporations are more than happy to feed and nurture it for financial gains or power or both.
How can 25% of the population believe the election was rigged? Wrong question... How can those same 25% believe a pandemic virus is a hoax, even as bodies stack up in temporary morgues - or in some cases as they literally lay in a hospital DYING OF IT? or that the Earth is 5,000 years old? or that Trump does not really lie 25,000 times in 4 years? or that Trump is really a business savant who just got really unlucky in casinos SIX TIMES?
When you are willing to believe the impossible and/or the logically inconsistent, then you are ripe for the whims of others who will control your reality for their benefit alone...and that is BEFORE you factor in the 24/7/365 drumbeat of conservative media assuring them that all of this horse shit is the actual truth and that THEY are the truly nonbiased and neutrally informed...makes me want to puke constantly.

(1,328 posts)someone would publish an in-depth study of what exactly is wrong with those people. What happened to make them that way? It's not just one thing, one experience they all shared, but what are the factors? Why be so gullible? Is the "non college educated" a too-high bar, are they high school educated? Is it a lack of teaching that makes them believe everything? I get the racism, they were clearly raised that way. trump took us all to a crossroad in 2016, and some of us saw him for what he is, and some of us didn't. Why? If it weren't so scary and dangerous, I would find this fascinating.

(9,895 posts) Absolute authoritarianism without meaningful accountability.
(sounds like "I alone can fix it." to me...)
(and the GOP Senate ensured this with no witnesses in the impeachment 'trial' as well...)
No tolerance for questions or critical inquiry.
Hmmm...what would you do if there were opposing viewpoints offering proof of mendacity to your followers? Probably screaming "Fake News" and making them a target for the deluded would be a good start...
No meaningful financial disclosure regarding budget or expenses, such as an independently audited financial statement.
STILL have not seen the tax returns, although when the information about them came out via the NYT, there were ample defenders downplaying the criminality of the entire Trump crime family and then a campaign to move them off the front page.
For an extra shot of caffeine, the finances of the NRA sure seemed to be an additional lurid tale of graft and deceit...
Unreasonable fear about the outside world, such as impending catastrophe, evil conspiracies and persecutions.
These people are DYING and denying that they have the very virus that is killing them!!! It doesn't get more brainwashed and cultish than literally drinking the Kool Aid...
There is no legitimate reason to leave, former followers are always wrong in leaving, negative or even evil.
The derisive term "R.I.N.O." was only the beginning, there is no relationship with anyone who rejects the cult's teachings and for the GOP/Trumpers that means ANYONE not sucking on Trumps gnarly nuts...
Former members often relate the same stories of abuse and reflect a similar pattern of grievances.
There are records, books, news articles, or broadcast reports that document the abuses of the group/leader.
NYT, Washington Post, ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, C-SPAN, and the others are ALL wrong/Soros-funded haters/part of the 'conspiracy'....etc., etc. etc.
Followers feel they can never be "good enough".
The group/leader is always right.
The group/leader is the exclusive means of knowing "truth" or receiving validation, no other process of discovery is really acceptable or credible.
Again..."only I can save you."....internalize THAT and compare/contrast to reality...
Seriously....that list contains traits of EVERY Trumper/GOP fool that I have conversed with in the past 10 years...it goes back to the "Tea Party" and even before that with the defenders of George W. Bush's tragic foreign policy and tax policies.
There's some that hope and write on ways to deprogram the Trumpers...
https://www.salon.com/2019/10/22/cam-members-of-the-trump-cult-be-deprogrammed-after-the-leader-falls-steven-hassan-says-yes/
Let's just say that I am far less optimistic of that personally...
birdographer
(1,328 posts)I had not considered the cult connection. Definitely a huge part of it. I also doubt deprograming, but I wonder if it will crumble a tiny bit when he is no longer accessible to them. Him in prison would be ideal. No longer in existence would be another. They are clearly weak.
