This could be a big deal

The Hill @thehill
Haaland being vetted by Biden team for Interior Secretary http://hill.cm/uwV03JV

The Biden transition team is in the process of vetting Rep. Deb Haaland (D-N.M.) for the Interior secretary post, sources told The Hill on Tuesday.

The development came after Haaland dropped out of the three-way leadership race for House Democratic Caucus vice chairwoman.

If Haaland is tapped by President-elect Joe Biden, her nomination would be historic, making her the first Native American Cabinet secretary, where she would oversee an agency with vast responsibility over tribal issues and public lands. In 2018, she became one of the first two Native American women elected to Congress, alongside Rep. Sharice Davids (D-Kan.).

Haaland, who chairs the House Natural Resources subcommittee that oversees national parks, forests, and public lands, got a nod Monday from full committee Chairman Raúl Grijalva (D-Ariz.), who had been endorsed for the Interior role by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC). Grijalva, a progressive leader, backed Haaland while asking fellow CHC members to do the same.

Mainly because we shouldn't lose Haaland as a Representative. Udall is retiring from the Senate this year and has the necessary experience and knowledge.

Or maybe there are other Native Americans not already in Congress who would be a better choice.

F-A-B-U-L-O-U-S!!!!!

Sounds like a FANTASTIC, AWESOME, BRILLIANT, SUPERB!!!!! Yes, I'm SHOUTING!!!

Lordy Lordy, it's about time! The tribes need to see one of their own in the upper levels of real power. I always feel a little bit guilty when thinking about Native Americans. After all, THEY were here, FIRST. They were already here and VERY well-established, on THEIR land, when white Europeans arrived, centuries ago (that we promptly proceeded to take away from them).

AND, even better yet, she comes from a state with a Democratic governor, so we won't lose that seat. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham will appoint another Dem to Haaland's Congressional seat. THIS is the kind of strategic thinking I was hoping to see! Be like a doctor, Mr. President-elect! "First, do no harm" especially to your party's position of leadership.
