Top Latino advocacy organizations are pushing for President-elect Joe Biden to appoint five Hispanics to Cabinet-level posts. The organizations include civil rights organizations like UnidosUS and elected official groups like the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) and the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators, grouped together as the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda.
California Attorney General Xavier Becerra
Becerra tops the list of Hispanics with Biden Cabinet aspirations, with more than two decades of legislative experience and a record of fighting the Trump administration as California's top law enforcement official.
New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham
Lujan Grisham is the front-runner to lead the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), a job she previously held at the state level in New Mexico.
Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez
Perez has Cabinet experience he was former President Obama's secretary of Labor and experience as assistant attorney general for civil rights. He's an alternative to Becerra for the DOJ post, for which outgoing Alabama Sen. Doug Jones (D) is reportedly under consideration.
Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti
Garcetti, a top Biden ally, would be a shoo-in for Transportation secretary. As mayor of the country's second-largest city, Garcetti has plenty of executive experience and TV-friendly charisma to bring to a Cabinet. But Garcetti said in October it's more likely than not that he'll finish his term as mayor, which ends in 2022.
Alejandro Mayorkas
The Cuban-born Mayorkas is among the most knowledgeable former Homeland Security officials in the country.

(18,402 posts)Thats a pretty big ask. Im not saying that all of these people are not excellent, they are. They represent a strong demographic in about 5 states, but overall, nationally, Im not sure they represent a third of the total electorate. Maybe they do. I dont know. Id like to see more Latinx participation in the higher echelons of government, but I still dont know that a third of the cabinet positions is a realistic goal.

So far as Democratic voters alone are concerned, since Blacks voted more strongly Democratic, it is probably something like 24% Black and 18% Hispanic.

(314 posts)For months, I have drifted off to sleep imagining President Biden's cabinet. Such joy that now it is beginning to really happen.

(35,454 posts)I think Becerra would be a good choice but am not in sync with the demand for numbers. Frankly, considering what is what, if anyone is entitled to raise a fuss about cabinet positions it's African-American women. Based on his choices so far, I think he's getting it right.

(13,964 posts)lose Lujan Grisham as my governor. Despite our uncontrolled spread of Covid here in NM, Grisham has done her best to keep the numbers down.
