I've seen enough: #NJ07 Rep. Tom Malinowski (D) *gained* ground in today's Somerset/Morris county updates, and his lead is back above 5,000 votes.
Tom Kean (R) lacks a realistic path back, and House Dems breathe a huge sigh of relief.

(32,017 posts)We really got our butts kicked downballot this year, and I am quite disturbed about it.
Why? How can we win over 5 million votes at the top of the ticket and then lose, badly and almost universally, downballot?
I dont get it.

(1,665 posts)Every single house seat in the USA was up for vote.
And we won more than the republicans did.
We won more.
There were 435 house elections. We won the majority of them.
But for some reason folks want us to act like we lost just because we didnt win as big as before. You know who should act like they lost? Republicans. They ACTUALLY lost. They didnt lose as many, or by as much, but they LOST more house races than they won.
Losing by less than before is still losing.
Winning by not as much as before is still winning.

(32,017 posts)Instead, I will wind up with -10 (or so) Democratic seats in the House.
I expected a 53-47 Democratic majority in the Senate. Instead, I might get a 50-50 split if we can miraculously pull off two Senate run-offs in GA.
Joe won the national popular vote by a strong margin. Somebody, please, explain to me why we did so poorly downballot.

(17,377 posts)President Obamas popular vote margin was similar to Bidens. In 2012 Republicans easily kept their House majority, while in 2020 Democrats were able to maintain a small majority themselves.

We still won downballot.
We won more house seats than Rs.
We have more senate seats now than before.
We won. Winning by less than you hoped isnt a loss. Its still a win. Dont let the Rs frame the narrative and act like they won downballot. Out of 435 house races, WE WON MORE THAN THEM. THEY LOST. AMERICA DOES NOT WANT THEM. Even after all their suppression, gerrymandering, all of it, they STILL LOST. There were 435 house races. We won the majority of them. Period.
A win thats not a blowout is still a win. Dont let anyone convince you it was a loss when it was just a win that wasnt as big a win as some folks were expecting. A win is a win.
Edit: I keep imagining us as a football team that just won the Super Bowl in a close game that we expected to win handily, whos then slinking off the field, heads bowed, weeping about our loss.
Can you imagine a team that won by even just one point slouching off the field and calling it a loss?
WE DIDN'T LOSE! Dont let anyone convince you that a win is a loss. The republicans lost. We won more of the races than they did. To buy into the narrative that it was a loss is to validate the republican claim that they won and people really want them. But they DID NOT WIN. They just didnt lose as badly as they expected to. They lost the majority of the house races. We won the majority of the house races. We won. They lost.

(25,816 posts)and against downballot Dems, or monkey business. Why would Dems vote for Joe and against downballot candidates?
The BS with Graham makes me suspect monkey business.
How about the vote discrepancies in Kentucky? Something smells, not sure what yet. I hope people investigate
fairly and find out what happened.

(3,322 posts)We flipped over 30 seats in 2018 in a 2010 GOP Tea Party gerrymandered map that I seriously did not think we could flip before a new map hopefully drawn up after 2020 census and for sure not before. We overperformed in 2018. This year we held on to many of them. So that was fortunate. But yes, it does suck we did not keep more seats.
But to answer your question more directly, we got kicked in messaging. The GOP are masters at messaging and they slammed us with socialism socialism socialism, and defund the police defund the police defund the police. The people heard these messages and said, yes we will get rid of the Tangerine Turd, but will check Biden's power with divided government so we can keep our police and not slip into a socialist state. Sucks that people are so gullible to continually fall for the GOP lies, but they are.

(32,017 posts)I dont like it for two reasons. No Democrat that I know is a Socialist ... seriously, NONE, and no Democrat running actually supported defunding the police. If you are saying that Republicans won because they were successful with their constant LYING about us, we have only one alternative, we have to LIE about them ... relentlessly, viciously, and painfully ... over and over, constantly, until it is embarrassing for anyone to even be associated with the Republican Party.
Thats what they have pushed us to, and as much as I may find this strategy ethically abhorrent, thats about the only alternative left to us if we wish to save this republic and protect the American people.

(3,322 posts)I agree. But I do not think the Dems will. It sucks to be the only adults in room.

(666 posts)So to say no one is not true, she is the poster child for what they were running against and majority of people are not for defunding the police. Again it was quite possibly the dumbest slogan in modern politics and it cost us. We went over this even many liberals in nyc and nyc area took it out in down ballot dems

(32,017 posts)I suppose what the Republicans have done would be the equivalent of our campaigning on the proposition that the whole Republican party believes everything she believes, even when they say they dont.
Perhaps we should try it?
