A letter from our small town Mayor

A message from Mayor Larry Wilkening,

I am writing this note to all residents of Hotchkiss and the North Fork Valley.

I have received requests to be more proactive concerning compliance to the Governor's order for wearing masks in stores and other areas where we are in close proximity to other people.

I know that we get reminded a lot about the COVID case numbers going up and our need to wear masks and social distance. I want to address this issue from a different angle. The stores in our community that are designated as Essential Businesses as well as restaurants and other businesses are under specific rules and regulations concerning mask wearing. The regulations not only affect their employees but also their customers. The lack of mask wearing, by employees AND customers, could result in businesses losing their ability to be open and serving the community.

I wear a mask because I'm in the High-Risk category (I'm over 65 years old and have underlying health issues.) I also wear a mask because I want to show my appreciation to the store employees that are required to wear a mask for 8 hours or more a day. I hope that my example also shows that their safety is a genuine concern of mine. If we all do our part by wearing masks, the community as a whole will be a safer place to live and work.

This Holiday Season I request that everyone in the community considers the safety of our neighbors as well as the people and companies that provide goods and services we need and enjoy. Please wear a mask, maintain proper distancing and stay home if you are sick.

Thank you!

I will be shopping locally this holiday season

and it brought me to tears. Many people in this area have taken this very seriously and we are very, very fortunate. Only 7 deaths so far but cases on the rise. My wife is an ER nurse in the middle of constantly changing protocols as the hospitals surrounding our little bubble are now filling up.
Everyone, please be cautious and stay well.
