Not that I think he will succeed, but if he does what will happen? I keep hearing people saying that the American people won’t stand for that, but really? All I see happening are protests around the country (similar to the ones this summer for George Floyd), riots and looting by right wing agitators, statements of ‘concern’ from a few Republicans, the MSM and pundits saying that this is unprecedented, trump and Barr using tear gas on D.C. protesters, the Democratic House investigating and probably impeaching, the senate acquitting....but in the end nothing really changes and Trump continues doing what he has done for the last 4 years, but more emboldened, his cult still worshipping him, and McConnell still confirming judges...

I truly believe it would lead to civil war. Things are on very thin ice, despite any appearance to the contrary.

A coup in the US is unthinkable and the violence unimaginable. Trump is only in this to save himself and his niece has already stated that he will burn the house down to save himself. That is exactly what he is doing.

7. The ONLY effective way to fight back would be through a general strike ...

If we assume this is a successful coup, Trump would have the entire military, AND the wingnuts with bajillions of guns (and a bunch of militias that have been training for just this sort of bullshit for years).

We would be wiped out so friggin' fast it's ridiculous if we tried to fight violently back.

Our only way to maybe effectively fight back is if ALL of us, and I mean ALL of us ... stop going to work.

And we ALL need to be ready to do that for as long as it takes.

The military would not likely follow an order to attack US citizens, at least most would not.

As far as all the meal team 6 members out there, most are cowards at heart and very out of shape. While still others are all flash and flare and would not risk getting into a firefight or break and run at the slightest resistance.

Cannot say how all this would play out but I'm least worried about so called militia types.

So it will be no one at all because a large percentage of the military are Trumpanzees just like the civilian populace.

I am reading a book about the Vel' d'Hiv Roundup in France during WWII.
The French police were ordered to clear out Jews and send them to Auschwitz.
French Jews thought the Germans might do that but never the French police that had been protecting them.
Some of the police felt it was wrong but they did it anyway and just as viciously as the Germans.

Our military will attack citizens without question if ordered.

The militias would align themselves with the military and we would be hopelessly outnumbered and outgunned. A not insignificant % of those militia types are former military actually. If we were shooting at the militias ... the military would shoot at us, if Trump were POTUS.

And do you seriously think Liberals as a group are in significantly better shape or are braver/willing to get into firefights vs Meal Team Six?

And we're also much more divided as a group ... made up all different races, creeds, orientations, etc. They are all 'white christian'. They will more easily organize themselves to fight together as a unit than our side ever would.

Our rebellion would be crushed. Don't kid yourself.

Our only chance is non-violent resistance. Something like ALL OF US refusing to work. That might get the rich people (i.e. the ones with real power) to the table to do something about the coup that's taken place.

Personally, I think that if Trump steals this election, it marks the permanent end of the United States as a democracy; after all, what would prevent the party in power from pulling this off every time? Given that, the breakup of the U.S. would be the most rational situation -- but attempting it in the here and now would certainly be a brutal, bloody mess, with a very uncertain outcome at best.

While apparent empires have broken apart before (most recently, the U.S.S.R.), those states were generally somewhat exhausted and with a faltering central leadership that didn't attempt to hold on by unlimited force. Would the Soviet Union had collapsed if, instead of Gorbachev, a Stalin 2.0 had been in power there?

Looking at it objectively, a breakup would probably be inevitable, eventually...but I'm talking about decades from now, long after Trump himself had gone and only a pale, half-hearted follower of Trump was leading an increasingly weak and dysfunctional state. Until then, we'd have a long and very dark future facing us.
