(83,759 posts)Seriously. How hard is it to wear a mask.

I'm among the most careful. I'm currently wearing a mask in the house 24/7 because my family is unwilling/incapable of keeping their masks on outside of the house. The day I started my spouse was indirectly exposed (which she did not disclose until 3 days later) - and two days later my daughter was directly exposed for several hours, unmasked.
I have no trouble outside of the home, but I nurse my coffee for hours. Even with a definitely exposed person in my house, I catch myself with my mask off longer than intended after I pull it off to have a few sips of coffee.
Even though I'm having trouble treating my home the same way I treat public places, I don't understand people who can't distinguish between public behavior and at home behavior. I don't even remove my mask for a sip of coffee these days - I just lift up the bottom high enough to take a sip under the mask and let it drop.
(My daughter is mostly isolating in the garage - when she comes in briefly she is double-masked and I immediately disinfect anything she touched. I also have a purifier that refreshes the air 4x an hour, with a .3 micron HEPA filter. So I should be safe, even if I forget occasionally.)

(2,750 posts)I wrote on here the other day that I HAD a friend that is a nurse that went hard core Trumpism a few years ago. He is one of the drooling, slobbering members that let's Fox News gin him up into a mess. I got the hell away from him!
Anyway, I called him when Eddie Van Halen died since we both dug Eddie quite a bit. He got on the politics BS and explained that masks are worthless, that they do absolutely nothing, and may make it worse. Whatever that means!
I reiterate that this is a nurse. Trump has warped the mind of what used to be sensible people.

(1,040 posts)Governor Kelly has been doing her best, but it doesn't help that the State Legislature has a Republican majority. They have fought her at every turn, taken her to court, whined and cried how unfair she was being and how "overreaching" her orders have been.
Thankfully, our county here in KS has done a relatively good job at following the Governor's orders. The local news is filled with reports from small businesses begging Kansas City's Mayor Quinton Lucas (on the Missouri side, of course) to "please don't do this to us." KC just instituted a 10pm shutdown on restaurants and bars (except for delivery and carryout). Other businesses, including one idiot Mexican restaurant owner on the KS side (Don Chilitos) are defying the orders and making no bones about it. Don Chilitos' owner, Barry Cowden, not only doesn't make customers wear masks -- he doesn't require employees to do so either, saying, "Its supposed to be a free country, and we can make our own decisions with what we do in our lives and in our businesses." He's getting some support, but by in large, people are posting on his FB page that they won't patronize his business anymore.
And this is why it won't go away. A national mandate is needed, although how it will be enforceable and make any big difference I just can't picture right now.

(1,040 posts)to his comments include asking if he makes his employees wash their hands, wear shoes, wear hairnets, etc., because, after all, it is a free country. His response has basically been he doesn't believe that science has proven that wearing a mask is beneficial. And I quote: "I dont believe it," Cowden said. "I dont think that there is any science that proves that." He thinks spacing out tables and "sanitizing efforts" are sufficient.
Won't eat there. I know others who used to eat there who won't. Personally I think he may have done this to try to drum up business from the idiots who are on his side. That won't last.
