This Week's Saturday Morning Supermarket Trip

First off, the toilet paper shelves were full. It appears that Cub Foods in Minnesota found a bunch of it in their warehouse or something, but there was plenty for all to buy. Paper towels, too, but I didn't need those.

Otherwise, the store was not too busy. Everyone had their masks on. As usual, store employees were using the slow period to stock shelves, so there were lots of partially blocked aisles with workers putting things on shelves. I waited in front of one reefer until the guy doing the stocking noticed me and said, "You need something behind this door?" When I said I did, he stepped back about six feet to let me grab what I needed. I thanked him.

All of the sanitation stations were fully stocked with wipes, hand sanitizer and disposable gloves, like always.

So, I got everything I needed for the week, checked out and went back to my car, where I sanitized my hands and drove home.

Uneventful.

1. Good. I was starting my Walmart order online and only found some Thanksgiving related

items out of stock. Large black olives which I buy all the time are one.

I bought a small chest freezer and slammed it about a month ago. I'm good until spring on most things. If it get bad, I'll have to settle for what I can get as far as produce and dairy.

my grocery is usually packed to the rafters, with long, long checkout lines.

Today? No lines, no wait.

I hope that it's because people aren't having a big dinner with lots of relatives and friends.

I was looking for a small turkey breast, since our TG is only 2 people, and there were only 3 left in the case.

I had a doctor's appointment on Wednesday that just down the street from one of the Costcos and so I went in. my eyes were dialated and so there was no way that I would be able to get any work done for a while. here were three pallets for only one brand of toilet paper with two of the pallets being empty. Just to be safe, I grabbed some toilet paper. .We had toilet paper already but I wanted to be safe.

I really want the vaccines to get here so that I can shop again

9. First world problems, I know, but I miss shopping for my own produce.

I have found that if I put notes in the produce items I get better produce. "I'd like two yams about the same size with nice skins." But no matter what kind of note I put on ginger, I end up with a HUGE piece of it, about the size of my hand with one or two pieces jutting off to the side. I don't think they know that you can snap off the size piece you need even though I've written that in the notes.

4. I went to Costco this week in the Bay Area

Midweek this past week, just about 45 minutes after the store opened. Very, very busy, with essentially every cart having both paper towels and toilet paper.

However, it wasn't as bad as when I went in early March, the morning after the impeached lame-duck one term Infector-in-Chief announced the "European travel ban." That morning was sheer panic, with the entry line into the store stretching the full width of the outside of store and the line to get the paper towels etc stretching from the entry to the back of the store in a 3 or 4 cart-wide line. People were in good spirits, but there was clearly a sense of panic.

My Costco trip, at least to me, revealed no panic, but folks were VERY determined to stock up on things.

7. I saw the Bamboo brand! But I'm not daring enough to try it

Call me boring, I know.

Generally speaking, I think folks are stocking up, but aren't panicking. If 95% of all folks in this country would wear masks through the end of the year and not hang out with people not in their pod, we could get over this.

My greatest indictment against Trump and other idiots like Kristi Noem and Ron DeSantis is politicizing mask-wearing and social distancing. As someone much wittier than me said recently, and to bring this discussion home, "it's much like politicizing toilet paper"!

everyone goes there.

I just go to Price Chopper early so there aren't many people. No lines this morning. Everyone had a mask.
Didn't see any empty shelves.

But boy have groceries gotten expensive.
