WASHINGTON Donald Trump is still trying to sow doubts about the election results, but planning already has begun for inaugural ceremonies in which Joe Biden is expected to officially become the nations 46th president.
But while planners of past presidential inaugurations have had to resolve complex issues like how to handle crowd control and security matters, organizers of the Jan. 20 ceremony are confronting an unprecedented challenge:
How do you safely stage a presidential inauguration in the middle of a deadly pandemic?
Even in normal times, its a big job, said Howard Gantman, who served as staff director of the joint congressional committee that oversaw Barack Obamas first inauguration in 2009.

Scaled back it still may draw more than Trump's.

(34,857 posts)1. It's still technically Trump's Oval Office and White House until noon on January 20th. No way would he ever permit Biden in that early. Too petty.
2. A big reason it's held at the Capitol is because the period the President & President-elect are at the ceremony is spent packing all the President's stuff, while then unpacking the new President's stuff, especially in the Oval Office (at least a bit of it).

Forget about the parades and balls and things like that.
Use the time to focus on health workers and dealing with covid.

(32,100 posts)I hope people will please stay home and watch it on TV. Leave attendance to Joe's and Kamala's friends and family, members of Congress, etc. All spread out, of course.
I'm sure they will encourage people to stay home. It would be fun if they could have drive-in viewings throughout the country.

Just going to state it now because we ALL know how the orange man and his fucked up followers will portray it. Something to do popularity and an expectant low attendance. Blah blah blah.
They are predictable!

No indoor events.
Since Democrats usually usually mask, and social distance, I'd hope some to most Independents as well - as long as the weather is decent (not pouring rain, or snow) do you think It'd be ok then for people to gather on the The National Mall witness it with the Jumbotrins set up?
Since I've already seen the Virtual Inauguration thing up on fb...maybe they won't do that at all.
I was in DC for Clinton's first, and both of Obama's Innaugurals - so exciting, and moving.
Of course different times.
Still, there could be fireworks at night over the Lincoln Memorial. 🥰 I love those.
I guess we'll see...
