in fiery rebuke of Trump fraud claimsSenator Bernie Sanders said the GOP is no longer a political party but a cult because it has largely remained silent or supportive as the president continues increasingly desperate challenges to the election results with no real evidence of fraud.

I don't always agree with Sanders but he's spot on in this case.

(5,499 posts)I think it also signals that he might not be interested in being part of Biden's cabinet. Having an attack dog like Bernie in the Senate could be good.

(529 posts)If Trump is a cult, then basically the entire GOP is one too.
The 6 interwoven American Cults, lots of overlap:
Trump cult

(21,624 posts)I mean, they've long had a fascist streak - McCarthy is proof of that.
But whereas McCarthy represented the more vicious wing back then, he's now taken over the party in every way. He, and these neo-confederates (plus the Armageddon freaks - which often overlap).
Anyone even slightly more moderate is now shunned as a RINO.

(18,402 posts)effort. That was a pretty big thing back in the 80s, but it involved specific sets of individuals. We now need to deprogram about 70 million people who belong to a specific cult.
Are there enough psychologists and psychiatrists to accomplish this?

He's not wrong, but he's retweeting what's been stated on MSM, repeatedly, in print, & social media sites for months.

(25,468 posts)He pretended to be a populist looking out for the working class, but signed on to everything the Republican Establishment elites wanted. The party is so dysfunctional they don't have any policies except tax cuts for the rich and dismantling everything. The Establishment is happy. Republicans will be primaried from the radical nutty right-wing if they go against Trump, his voters see him as their outsider savior. Of course it's a cult. The Republican Party chose their path a long time ago: racism, religion, hate, fear, propaganda, voter suppression, etc. Why anyone would think that both sides are the same or the Democratic Party has shifted to the Right is delusional.
Trump makes everything about conspiracy theories and everybody out to get him, including election rigging. The American people love him and agree with him, so if he loses it has to be rigged! It was clear in 2016 that people voted for him not because of economic distress, it was all in their imaginations. Republicans who thought the economy was getting better went from 15% in October 2016 to 80% in February 2017, percentage who thought the country was going in the right direction went from 24% in December 2016 to 70% in July of the next year. These people aren't voting for policy, they're voting for identity, and they'll never vote for progressives.

(67,782 posts)....they left the republican party and have been doing just about everything they could to finish them off.
Unfortunately that's probably not going to happen.
The same was said for the republican party back in 1964 when Johnson crushed Goldwater and Democrats increased their leads in the House and Senate, both to veto-proof majorities of 295-140 and 68-32 (although Johnson wasn't going to do much vetoing)
Everyone in the country said that republicans were dead.
But Nixon won in a virtual landslide and they won 5 seats in both houses, although Democrats retained the majority, and Nixon followed that up with a 520-17 crushing of McGovern.
