A nod to Biden's Irish roots.

i've been down an irish music rabbit hole for going on 2 mos.
planning a trip over there, plus taking voice lessons.
come up for some cole porter, or steve earle once in a while.
but want to be ready to sing in the pubs when this shit dies down.

(53,031 posts)The little town of Doolin in County Clare. Musicians from all around the world go there to learn Irish traditional music, and you can enjoy free sessions in the bars in the evenings and weekends.
https://doolin.ie/
I'm sure it's much more developed now than when I was there in the 80s, when it consisted of two pubs, one on either end of the road, and caravans at the shore, where the musicians stayed.
The Ring of Kerry is amazingly beautiful. Definitely a must see. https://ringofkerrytourism.com/
I'd also recommend that you go in the summer because things close in the winter and it's very difficult to keep warm inside in Ireland, or at least that was the case when I was there in the late 90s.
i hope i can get someone i trust to watch my farm.
summer is mostly not possible, tho there is a slow time between planting and picking.
my plan is to visit my family places. between my voice lessons and learning the tin whistle, i think i can get away w singing in the pubs w/o making too much of a fool of myself.
learning the old songs while i spin my wheels.

cousin wants to come here. trying to work it out for her to fly here, visit a while and cruise back. or vice versa.

Still my favorite Shane song--I made my buddies learn it: St. John of Gods.

(31,015 posts)As Ive gotten older, I find I can appreciate an artists work without endorsing their politics. Maybe I just think I shouldnt deprive myself of timeless good music because of ephemeral politics. Im still wrestling with that moral dilemma, however
mtnsnake
(22,236 posts)and I'm with you when it comes to your philosophy about artists and politics. When it comes to artists, especially musicians, I'm not going to bite off my nose just because they don't see politics the same way I do. Even Jon Voight. I think he's a flaming asshole politically, but it doesn't mean I'm going to stop watching him in movies like Deliverance and Holes. Just the same, it is really disappointing that Van Morrison has taken up to protesting the lockdowns. I wish it wasn't so.

Remember when The Boss played a concert for Obama, and Dump couldn't even get a Springsteen tribute band?
If his inaguration committee people were on top of their game, they'd pick a wide variety of musical styles to showcase. E Pluribus Unum!

(25,849 posts)When I was a little girl, the elderly aunts would all look at me and say, "Ahh, she has the map of Ireland on her face."
I grew up in this country. And even if we are only considering people of European origin, there's a lot of diversity. Let alone everyone else.
The first time I went to Ireland I was amazed. Every single person I saw looked exactly like my brothers and my sisters and my cousins. I finally understood what the elderly aunts were saying.

(21,675 posts)put on hold for awhile...My main Irish family is from Cork and Kerry. They came to Quebec during the potato famine, skipping out on their indenture to move to Buffalo. There's also some family from Northern Ireland that go back much further who landed in PA/OH.
It sure explains the pale skin and insensitivity to heat! Do you go back often? (obviously not at this time)

(12,154 posts)I'm so happy to share this wonderful music. It's a traditional song that's been performed by others, so you may have heard one of those versions.
But I think nobody does it as well as Altan -- not least because of the incredible voice of Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh. She sang it with the full band on the 1992 album Harvest Storm, which at that time featured her late husband Frankie Kennedy (who tragically died two years after the 1992 record was released, at age 38). I've posted a link to the 1992 version from Harvest Storm below.
Altan's rendition appends a reel, "The New-Rigged Ship," in the fashion of many Celtic arrangements that feature two or more tunes strung together. (And let me add that "The New-Rigged Ship" seems a fitting theme for the incoming Biden-Harris administration as they lead us to calmer waters!)
"Dónal Agus Mórag" commemorates the wedding of an Irish groom and a Scottish bride. According to the English translation of the lyrics, it was one hell of a party!

(1,945 posts)We have a local community theater and they used to come every year for years for St Patrick's Day. We'd always go. Definitely a favorite. Finally they stopped coming, they had lost their original harpist and I think touring was getting to be too much. I miss them for sure. It will be great to see them at Joe's event.
I just found an article that says they were doing their farewell tour this year. Rescheduled for next March on the East Coast. I'm surprised they were still performing internationally! They are still bringing The Pilatzke brothers, who do a form of the step dancing from the Ottawa Valley, which I prefer to the stiffer Riverdance style. They also performed here (SoCal) when we saw The Chieftains. Now I have to go watch some videos...
