(CNN) Canadians, officials have an important message for you: "Do not let moose lick your car."
Yes, you read that right.
Officials in Jasper, an alpine town in Canada's Alberta province, have put up signs asking motorists to avoid allowing moose to lick the salt, a treat moose find hard to resist, off their cars.
"They're obsessed with salt, it's one of the things they need for the minerals in their body," Jasper National Park spokesman Steve Young told CNN. "They usually get it from salt lakes in the park, but now they realized they can also get road salt that splashes onto cars." .........(more)

(146,351 posts)That reminds me of the Minnesota Zoo, which used to have a couple of moose in an exhibit there. My wife and I went to that nice zoo, shortly after moving to Minnesota. We got to the moose enclosure, where a sign was posted:
"Do Not Touch the Moose."
Normally, I am obedient to such signs, but as we stood on the platform overlooking the enclosure, a very large male Moose strode over and stuck his head and impressive horns over the railing on the platform, looking mournfully at me as I stood right there beside his head.
So, I reached out and did what I always do to large mammals that present their heads to me. I scratched the top of the moose's head fairly vigorously with my fingers. Mr. Moose carefully moved his head to indicate where additional scratches were needed, so I obliged. After a good scratching he moved off.
In the meantime, a family with children came onto the platform, while I was helping the itchy moose with head-scratching. My wife looked at the children and said, "Do not do what that man is doing." That was just before the moose, satisfied with my attentionis, walked away from the platform.
Who am I to deny a request from a friendly moose with an itchy head? I mean, really...

(36,748 posts)Give them a salt block and a scratching post and they are in heaven.
Ahhh...lifes simpler pleasures.

(146,351 posts)The top and back of the head are especially troublesome to scratch. I've had great success in making friends with all sorts of creatures, large and mall, by scratching their heads. As you say, simple pleasures that humans can render, since we have hands and fingernails.

(3,542 posts)We found our road blocked by a moose. Came to a dead stop on a small back road. Honked the horn, drove a bit closer, moose was unfazed. My bil, who operates a dairy farm with sis rolled down the window, stuck his hands out and clapped, once! Loudly. Just like he would with one of his herd. That moose took off in a flash.
Luckily there was no salt involved, but I guess it would be worth a try...

We don't see many moose down here in Florida, or road salt for that matter.

(14,118 posts)By allowing moose to lick the salt off your car, they will become habituated with being around cars. That poses a risk to both the animals and the drivers who can accidentally crash into them.
