US records 20 straight days of 100,000 new coronavirus infections

The U.S. on Sunday marked the 20th straight day of more than 100,000 new confirmed COVID-19 infections, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. More than 12.2 million cases have been confirmed in the U.S. as of Sunday, a staggering number that surpasses every other country's total. The U.S. has confirmed more than 3 million cases more than India, the country with the second-highest number of infections. India has seen more than 9 million cases and has recorded a rate of 60,000 cases per day for weeks.

Deaths in the U.S. also continue to climb and most recently passed a quarter of a million, another grim statistic that sits far higher than the levels recorded in other countries.

Despite the U.S.'s struggles with controlling the virus's spread, President Trump touted U.S. successes in the arena of pandemic response at a Group of 20 meeting on Saturday, according to White House officials.

"During his remarks, President Trump highlighted how the United States marshaled every resource at its disposal to respond to the crisis, as well as the unprecedented economic recovery of the United States on a foundation of tax and regulatory cuts, energy independence, and fair trade deals," said White House spokeswoman Kayleigh McEnany.
