I’m in one of the reddest states. But I’ve only ever lived in blue areas and am so naive when it comes to how deep the racism is here.

They try to work politics into things, are typical trumper types. The threads they start - and the comments they make - sometimes get closed and removed, but often not.

Ours is mostly about finding local folks to do various home improvements, lost pets, power or internet cable outages and local restaurants. By muting the worst offenders, it is actually passable.

I was stupid to think that it could be tame here.

ETA. I usually look at the lost pets on the site.

In the Bay Area, Nextdoor has been quite tame. There are a few flare-ups, but nothing out of the ordinary. Most of the time it's recommendations for repair persons, missing pets, etc.

Then again, maybe I don't use it enough to know what's really going on.

My wife apologized twice. And the woman kept attacker her. Finally had to block her. The ultimate irony is the woman doing the attacking was acting like a classic “Karen”.

I’m sick of this term and ready for it to go away.

Most people who use the term have little to no understanding of its origins. I got called "Karen" for vocally standing up for minority rights. (My recollection is that it was in the context of ensuring access to voting - but it's been a while. When I pointed out how absurd it was to call someone Karen for vocally advocating that minority rights not be trampled on he was absolutely clueless as to what I was talking about.)

They went on for 3 days lambasting me and name calling - "Karen" etc. When they got tired of that, one of them sent me hate email. I had to tell her not to make me get an attorney to order a cease & desist.

I posted concern about an emaciated dog at the park nearby. Some woman had the poor thing out in the heat (was Summer 2020). The dog could not sit or stand and she had no bed or blanket or anything for it to lay down on. The dog could not play with the other dogs and was vulnerable attack since it could not run. Couldn't grok what she was thinking. She claimed she was "socializing" the poor thing. I don't think so. It was over 90 that day and humid as hell.

I finally made it clear I didn't give a damn about what the humans thought. My concern was for the dog. "Oh you just want to prove you're a good person!" shouted one of them. (in text). I guess so. I care about animals and can't stand seeing them abused. Whether that makes me good or bad, I don't give a shit.

That comment though, comes from the narrative the ex has spread about me here. The ex is an extremely abusive malignant narcissist and has employed flying monkeys.

But even outside that, some people are just assholes. The 'Karens' calling someone else 'Karen'. Pretentious hypocrisy. Pfft.

It's not a single place, the way Facebook is. In my area, it's very useful and quite tame. When loons show up, they get shut down quickly. I would have said "shouted down", but there's almost no shouting there.

It sounds as if yours has bad moderation, but how can it be the great asset for your neighborhood that it can be if the good people take a powder and let it be taken over by troublemakers?

NextDoor, and programs like it, has the potential to turn the soulless social deserts so many neighborhoods are into places people are happy to call home, and of course to raise property values, drive crime away, improve schools, protect the environment, defend civil rights, find lost puppies, and...restore the soul of America.

I’m in the most liberal part of a red state - and it still went for Trump if that gives you any idea what my neighbors may be like.

He's new to the area, and seems determined to stir things up with persistent pro-Trump and anti-Dem comments. He carries on like an internet tough guy when people respond to his provocations with requests to save his belligerent political rants for Facebook or some other such community.

He must have a very small knob.
