Proposed new registration rule would require car registered in state.by Greg Palast. November 23, 2020
Georgias Board of Elections is trying to sneak through a new rule that could block new registrations before the Senate runoff to people who dont have a car registered in the state.
This knocks out students and lower income urban voters (i.e. Black Atlantans) without cars. Of course, you cant force people to buy a car in order to vote. The voters will be allowed on the rolls after a hearing, which will of course be after the January 5 election.
The GOP Secretary of States excuse? To prevent voter fraud. Brad Raffensperger claims people from out of state will be driving into Georgia to register to vote in the runoff.
Our team in Georgia contacted Raffenspergers office and asked if theyve encountered a single fraudulent out-of-state voter. So far, weve had no answer.
We will expose it. We will fight it.

(7,627 posts)Obviously you can not impose a criterion such as owning a car to be able to vote.

(32,688 posts)It then says they can use things like car registration, driver's license, are just one thing. They can also consider utility bills, property taxes, etc. too, just like they always have.
Palast pulls this crap all the time and gullible people fall for it.
Some of what Palast said might be hyperbole, but there are legitimate issues with this change. I listened to the audio from the Board Meeting. Even though they tried to pretend that nothing had changed from existing state law, there is a significant difference in that the wording changed from saying that the registrar "may consider" certain criteria to stating that the registrar "shall consider" someone's eligibility based on 15 pieces of criteria which favor older, wealthier and more established voters. Young people, poor people, and college students (especially those who live in campus dorms but are from out of state) get thrown under the bus if this change goes through.
For now they claim they're tabling the rule and discussion on the topic was barely allowed.

(54,770 posts)I bet not because its obviously not a change. Palast obviously didnt as he rushed to post his junk looking for an audience.
The law has been in place for years.

(34,066 posts)People around here tend to get cranky when I point out things like the actual language in the proposal (permissive, rather than mandatory) and the existing statute that already includes a lot of what is in the proposal.

(32,688 posts)RETHUG registrations on a case by case basis. Somebody needs to test this out! Or do new people need to just register as republican and be done with it??

(11,256 posts)It just provides an additional basis for confirming eligibility to vote. I assume that most people use actual residency in GA, but a car title could also suffice if the person can't prove that they own or rent property in GA.
There are too many real reasons to worry. Let's not invent one more.
