(2,072 posts)of a trial period trying out several people, but the production has been laying the groundwork for Jennings to be the successor for a while now.

(8,445 posts)I think Alex Trebek would have approved. Maybe he was actually part of the decision.

(64,852 posts)Part of Alex's tenure was the gravitas he brought as someone you believed knew an awful lot of the answers.
Jennings has that already, because with our own eyes, we saw the guy get the right answer, under game pressure 98+% of the time.
I think it's a fine choice.

(27,794 posts)After his winning streak, people starting rooting for winning streaks and cash pile-ups, rather than just enjoying the game on a night-by-night basis. I understand that they changed the rules so that you could win more than five times - and that part I was fine with - but he ushered in an era of category hopping and Daily Double shopping that I think detract from the game for those of us who like to play along at home. I know other people differ. I had friends who would tune in every night because they enjoyed watching Arthur Chu or James Holzhauer, but I stopped watching during both their streaks.
I was hoping it would be Ted Allen from Chopped, who has a neutral personal i really like, and also some game show bona fides, which Ken Jennings does not have.
Austen the Bartender - he's too much about mugging for the camera. At least Ken Jennings won't do that.
I'm very disappointed, though.

(8,445 posts)Side note: I think I've gotten smarter in the last couple of years. My Jeopardy game has certainly improved. It's unfortunate that they don't seem to think I deserve to be sent my winnings.

(64,852 posts)I think it turned question selection into a highly tactical thing, rather than just going top to bottom.
Also, I think it only works if one is very, very knowledgeable, and has a fast mind, so getting that button pushed first can be the focus.
The other thing he changed that many now figured out, is that guessing is death in jeopardy. He rarely pushed that button if he was only guessing.
I think he ushered in a more strategic way of playing the game.
So, I actually prefer it this way.
We're pretty much opposites in that regard.

(27,794 posts)If I like a category, I like to go through it start to finish. Now it seems that if they miss a question in one category they just ditch it and if I like that category it's very annoying.
I also do not care about strategy! I just want to answer questions at home. The strategy aspect drives me bonkers. It's not Battleship. It's Jeopardy!
I'm always pleased when someone finds a Daily Double too soon and can't build an early lead. In fact, while I don't usually care who wins, I also dislike runaways and with all these tactics, there are more runaways then there used to be, and I would assume no one likes that.

(3,635 posts)Jeopardy was always a more difficult game, but one that even regular folks could get a few correct, as the contestants worked the board in the standard/simple way of going from lower dollar to higher (and thus easier answers to harder) within the same category.
Now it's too frenetic, as they jump around the board looking for the daily double, and the viewer's brain doesn't get a chance to 'warm up' and get into the flow of the category.

(66,286 posts)He didn't know that segue was pronounced "seg-way'. He pronounced it "segg".
They had to stop taping on my appearance until he could sort out the pronunciation mishap with the judges. He was a little bit of a jerk. But he was a businessman doing his job...
ProfessorGAC
(64,852 posts)But, he seemed knowledgeable. In Jennings' case, there's no "seem" about it. Big head start.

(27,794 posts)Conservative kind of guy, a little robotic. Huge favorite of Alex Trebek. I don't have a huge beef with him, I just don't want him as host.

(52,116 posts)not sure why anyone would think a good contestant would make a good host.
actually sounds a bit gimmicky to me, but i guess it's a trial period so if it doesn't work out they can get someone better suited....
LisaM
(27,794 posts)But at least it gave me a chance to say that Ken Jennings is robotic.

(284 posts)Definitely not something they should do long term, but I would totally watch a week of it. Or maybe half a week. You don't want it to go so long that it's disrespectful or anything. But that would be so great. LOL

After I watched the Jeopardy Marathon a few Saturdays ago, I was reminded that Ken does have a sense of humor. We'll see who else completes for the job.
I'm more interested in the program itself and the competitors.

(3,268 posts)...Alex was running out of questions to ask Jennings about his personal life. Alex asked "Is there anything about your life we haven't discussed that you'd like to tell us?" Reply (not exact) "Well Alex, I once shot a man down south." So yeah-he has a sense of humor.

(52,116 posts)actually just kidding, based on the characters they played.
i loved the character of "data", but levar burton has way more talent and would make a far better jeopardy host.
or maybe then it would be geordipardy?
