WASHINGTON Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Monday she will step down as top Democrat on the Judiciary Committee in the new session of Congress beginning early 2021, marking a victory for progressives who pressured her to step aside.
After serving as the lead Democrat on the Judiciary Committee for four years, I will not seek the chairmanship or ranking member position in the next Congress, the California Democrat said in a statement.
Feinstein, 87, said she intends to remain on the committee. She won re-election to a six-year term in 2018 and her term doesnt expire until the end of 2024.
The senator came under fierce criticism from progressives after she lavished praise on Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., for his handling of the Amy Coney Barrett Supreme Court hearing, and gave him a hug after the proceedings concluded on Oct. 15.

(1,349 posts)As a Californian, I've always reluctantly voted for her. She's never been dependably progressive, but it seems she's much less so lately.
She's 89 years old. She'll be 93 when her term ends. Not to be ageist, but c'mon already...

(15,325 posts)I have no idea what you consider "never been dependably progressive, " but she has been a lifetime supporter, thru funding from her PAC to Legislation for so many causes, for some of the most consistantly oppressed groups in history.
Feinstein has ALWAYS been a forward progressive advocate & voice.

(11,913 posts)She should have learned a lesson from Colin Powell, about damaging one's reputation and doing something that overshadows previous good.
Her Powell moment was when she not only hugged Leningrad Lindsey maskless, but publicly praised him for fairness and a good honest hearing, when the exact opposite was true. If that weren't bad enough, she went on to announce that if Democrats got the Senate back, making her Chair of Judiciary, that she would return to the "blue slip" tradition, thus opening the door for republicon scumbags to block all of Biden's appointments.
So I'm glad someone else will hopefully Chair the committee, someone who will make sure Biden's nominations get those positions.
And I do hope she's remembered for those good things.

(15,325 posts)She has authored legislation to prevent sex-trafficking and advance cybersecurity, created the nationwide used AMBER alert system, and has advocated for environmental reform and protection of natural resources.
One of her most notable Senate accomplishments was leading the six-year review into the CIAs detention and interrogation program. Her investigation would lead to the passage of legislation banning the use of torture in 2014. In continuing her trend of firsts, Senator Feinstein was the first woman member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, the first woman to chair the Senate Rules and Administration Committee and the Senate Intelligence Committee, and the first woman to serve as ranking member on the Senate Judiciary Committee. She is currently the ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, senior member on Select Committee on Intelligence, senior member on Committee on Appropriations, and a senior member on the Committee on Rules and Administration.

It is pitiful that there are those who disavow an entire career of advocacy like Feinstein's, because of a mispeak, that decided NO outcome, other than offer up a wedge for those who have sought to undermine the long valued efforts of yet ANOTHER "Establishment Democrat".
Run with that wedge...if that's all they can find, the shame is on them. NOT Sen Feinstein.
She has a long career of proving her fight & her worth to society.
💙
Thank you for your dedication throughout your long successful career of advocacy, thru the funding via your PAC & Support thru Legislation.
The benefit of your dedication has been long & far reaching.
Bless you in your retirement. You have well earned it.
