these discussions does anyone ask, can the Democrats afford to lose a seat in the Senate from a state that has a republican Governor?
We have a runoff coming up in Georgia, and if we win both runoffs, we win the Senate

(33,643 posts)Even if it screwed us out of a Senate Majority.
I don't *THINK* he would, but the fact that I do kinda have to wonder ...

(4,131 posts)If Bernie took a cabinet position it means he was offered a cabinet position - by President-elect Biden. Anyone trying to paint that as Bernie trying to 'screw us out of a Senate majority' is way too deep in the Kool-Aid. If Joe Biden offers Bernie a cabinet position, you'd blame Bernie for taking it but not Joe for offering it?
That makes exactly zero sense.
We're better than this, guys. Joe hasn't even been inaugurated yet and already the circular firing squad is discharging the first volley.

(33,643 posts)Under no circumstances should Bernie get a cabinet position if his leaving the Senate means we go from 50 to 49.
It should not be offered, and if it were, he should not take it under that circumstance.
But you're right ... Joe would almost certainly not offer it, so it's academic really.
And he shouldn't be lobbying for it either because we can't afford to lose a Senate seat period. Not saying he IS, cause I don't know ... but I wouldn't approve of his doing so.
And I like Bernie, okay?

(11,008 posts)As a cabinet member or a senior member of the Senate? If the Senate makeup was different, I could MAYBE see it, but not as it stands, at all. And if he's having to lobby for the position, I suspect he's not the front-runner.

In the senate, his self exile has kept him from ever becoming more than a +1 vote for legislation decided on and written by the Democratic caucus. He's said that being in congress is a waste of time; he meant everyone, but easy to believe he meant it for himself. The senate provides an extremely privileged place to make a difference or just pull in $174K/year until retirement, but it is no place for a socialist to foment revolution.

(6,992 posts)Sometimes it makes sense. I think that Barack Obama pulling Rahm Emmanuel from the House was, in a large part, a clearing of the way for Nancy Pelosi.

As for CNN, compared to the Republicans, it's always a boring news day on the Democratic side. They always have to design "balance," i.e., tension and conflict, into their political entertainment product, using what they have to work with.
And of course, always with an overall goal of elevating Republican power and sabotaging Democratic. Business as usual.

(15,278 posts)but Sen Casey would be a great secretary of labor. He believes in unions, higher minimum wage, on the jib safety and more. Just as importantly, he knows right from wrong. He would be an outstanding advocate for working Americans.
