How specific do Trump pardons have to be?
I hear he can grant pardons for federal crimes not yet charged as Ford did with Nixon.
But does he have to designate each of the crimes they might be charged with or can he give a blanket pardon for all crimes committed in the past?

Carter pardoned the draft dodgers so they could return from Canada without fear of indictment.
You can even be pardoned for crimes no one knows about. If the pardon is for any offense in a certain date range, it might cover some crimes even the president didn't know about.

(3,282 posts)to modify the constitution, I would love an amendment to place limits on the executive including reducing pardon powers. I think that the powers should be limited so that Presidents can't just pardon friends or people that helped cover up something for them.
A good step would be to eliminate pardoning power if the person being pardoned ever held a position in the pardoning presidents administration.
Have been saying the same thing about pardoning people. Presidents shouldnt be able to pardon those in their own administration or those who have supported or are associated with them for the same or similar crimes.

if trump self pardons this is strong possibility this would be ruled invalid even by a conservative supreme court

(5,499 posts)I think there will be a great deal of pressure on Biden to investigate and potentially prosecute the Trump administration. If Trump pardons everyone and resigns at the last minute to be pardoned himself, it could throw any investigations/prosecutions to the states.
I think for Biden, the concern is getting the country back on track, leading us in a post-covid reconstruction domestically while fixing our world standing. Biden would rather news headlines focus on this work rather than leading with stories about a past corrupt Trump administration.
And maybe, just maybe, Biden hangs the threat of total exposure around the necks of congressional Republicans to get bi-partisan support for his agenda.
