Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsMy sister-in-law died from Covid last night.
My brother has been married to her for over 40 years.
Below is the thread about her initial hospitalization.
on the 15th:
https://www.democraticunderground.com/100214558894
There was no point in trying to update it throughout her hospital stay. Her status seemed to change almost daily! Her blood oxygen (SpO2) was at 98% on Sunday (while wearing an oxygen mask) and the doctors/nurses seemed to think she would recover and be home within a week. Then she had yet another downturn and was placed on a ventilator a couple days ago, until passing away late last night.
It's an ironic coincidence that she passed away on Thanksgiving. They hosted our extended family Thanksgiving get-togethers, with her cooking most of the food (such as the turkey) for each of the last many years. We cancelled those plans weeks ago because of the pandemic, long before she was even infected.

(14,766 posts)Upper Valley has been full for at least 3 weeks......both part of Premier system...both are at maximum capacity essentially....my son-in-law.. his step-dad's mother is just out of ICU at the Valley off a ventilator...
It is hitting families in clusters...everywhere I go now someone has covid-19 in the family...None of my current patient list/home care infusions have covid-19 yet...but definitely their family members do! Doing my visit...full PPE...
I only shop now at Costco and Dorothy Lane Market...DLM in Springboro is amazing...cleaning carts before returning cart to store...they have a cleaning station, hand sanitizer at several locations, at checkout...each checkout counter is disinfected after each customer, they ahve a monitor to tell checkers to even go wash their hands....No one there without a mask.
Wednesday night, I went into Krogers/ Englewood to quickly get a few items/ reluctantly mind you...crowded....multiple no masks...I offered one to a really tall fella...laughed at me said.." Are you kidding?" So, in 40 minutes...7 people without masks...No enforcement when reported....I plan to call BWC/ report line today...if they get 2 reports or more...closed for 24 hours...well..we will see...
Be aware...

(15,526 posts)An ambulance took her to a small Kettering hospital branch in Troy initially, and soon thereafter she was transported to their main hospital in Dayton.
I've been super-careful for months, not even walking inside a store since March. Groceries have all been pick-up orders for me.
I was concerned about that particular brother and his wife because they used to eat inside restaurants pretty often, but my brother said they stopped doing that after the pandemic.
She probably caught it from their young granddaughter, who got infected at her school but had no symptoms. We don't know that with certainty, of course.
Then she gave it to my brother, despite how he tried to avoid it, and they both had VERY mild symptoms for many days. He seems to be completely recovered from the virus now, but obviously her condition suddenly worsened about a week and a half ago.
Montgomery County is "Level 4" purple now, but I think some adjacent counties are actually worse. The positivity rate is higher in Miami County, for example, but that's not one of the indicators used in Ohio's color code system for whatever reason. Positivity rate is Ohio's focus in regard to travel to and from other states, but not for the counties within this state???
https://coronavirus.ohio.gov/static/OPHASM/Summary-Alert-Indicators.pdf
I'm surprised that the Kroger in Englewood would allow that mask-less nonsense! It's one of their biggest stores in the area! Do they really want to risk a temporary closure?! I agree with you for reporting it!

(14,766 posts)I'm so glad you are being vigilant with protocols...Not much we can do with the offensive covid-19 deniers/no-mask folks but avoid them, report them...and hunker down...I think my focus is that I will assume everyone has covid-19 as it keeps me sharp with my protection protocols.
This is going to get intensely worse by Christmas....I suspect we will have tent style covid-19 areas by then...You noticed, they are using Children's Hospital for adults now, stating non-covid 19 patients but they can't control that overall......That is a double edge sword...they need the beds/space but will contaminate ....This is big...real big now due tyo Trump and his election agenda to deceive America during a pandemic.

(14,766 posts)but...just realize that the covid-19 virus has been here say 10-11 months...spreading, mitigating and not going away...we just won't have vaccine compliance and we really don't know if it will be that effective...projected outcomes are what we have based upon small, tiny test poole of the study....It will be at least 10 months for vaccine improvement in infection rate and that is if there is compliance.
Lock down is my hope.... along with treatment modalities.

This virus is nasty and insidious and you can never know how your body will respond to it...and it seems to depend on how much of a viral load you were exposed to coupled with where it gains a foothold and any pre-existing conditions.
You and your family have my deepest sympathies and are in my thoughts.

(15,526 posts)... about her from the hospital.
The entire family was convinced that the worst was behind her this last weekend, with her blood oxygen reaching 98%.
Her treatments involved convalescent plasma early on, then Remdesivir.
The doctors wanted to put her on a ventilator pretty soon after she was hospitalized, but she refused. So then her lungs were "aspirated" in some way and she showed dramatic improvement.
Yet her lungs filled with fluids yet again. Another downturn and lower SpO2 levels.
Then she coughed up fluids after being placed on a BiPap machine instead of her previous continuous-pressure CPap, and that's when her blood oxygen was finally back to the upper-90's.
Then that didn't last either! She weakened yet again and was finally put on a ventilator regardless, passing away about two days afterwards.
BumRushDaShow

You mentioned that you think she caught it from an asymptomtic child family member and that is what worries me so much about the holidays this year. The children are going to be the superspreaders at all these family gatherings and people aren't going to be as cautious around them as they would be around adults. This is primarily the reason I want to avoid Christmas and want my parents to avoid it as well.
Again, I am so sorry to hear about your sister-in-law. Sending you and your family healing thoughts.

Low blood oxygen can damage organs, and this virus is known to damage heart tissue among other organs too.

We've all sacrificed too much to avoid infection up to this point, especially with vaccines on the horizon and the current uncontrolled spread.
